  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I looked up sun chokes. They look like the perrennial sunflowers I planted a few years before we had our concrete patio poured. I never replaced them. I'm pretty sure the goldfinches were disappointed!

Yes... but the best part is the tubers which we harvest, dehydrate, and add to soups and stews. They are also good roasted when we roast veggies. Two issues, one is they are very difficult to clean. Use a sandy-loamy soil to reduce that problem. The other is they are have a tendency to cause wind. Dehydrating them helps.
Also once you get them started in a plot, they will try to take over and spread. But they are a good perennial veggie. Now that we are getting a little older, we want as many low-maintenance plants as we can find. Our 10 x 20 bed is more than enough. to keep is for a full year.
They are also called Jerusalem Artichokes. Which is odd because the do not come from Jerusalem, and there is nothing Artichoke about them.

I know about the time! My husband was more obsessed than I! We both had ancestors who fought in the Revolution, but neither of us joined the Sons or Daughters. Is there an advantage to membership?

I don't know all the ins and outs of membership. They do provide scholarships for education through an application process, and members apparently do a lot of volunteer work for veterans associations, etc. and for historical purposes.

Black-eyed peas are a yummy southern dish. I bought some very early in our marriage when I ran across a Hoppin' John recipe. We both loved the Hoppin' John! So it became a New Year's tradition. :)

What is a sun choke?

Are your seeds Outside Pride brand Johnny-Jump-Ups? The pkg. suggests planting them in the shade down south.

Moss rose? Are you talking about portulaca with very delicate flowers? I call those moss rose and I love them! "Moss Rose Seeds, Portulaca Double Mixed Colors."

I love black-eyed peas, they have a flavor all their own. Cooked by themselves is my favorite. Hoppin' John is a fine dish. But then anything with peas and rice is!

Yes, Outside Pride. I've had very good luck with their seeds over the years. Shade was my plan. ;) I didn't get them planted today, but maybe tomorrow afternoon. It didn't warm up until after lunch today and I had lots of other things to do.

Yes, portulaca. I bought a couple six-packs of plants. They grow well here, seem to like the heat, and will last all summer. I believe I got one pack of yellow and one red.

Before the days of personal computers and internet, we went to the National Archives, the Library of Congress and trips to relatives around the country, as well as county courthouses, Quaker records and even a Catholic priest in a little country church. After internet, he spent hours and hours on Ancestry.com.

Library of Congress! We never made it there to to do research. ;) But we've spent time in many a small-town history society building, in cemeteries, genealogy rooms at libraries. My husband has a few books he ordered from genealogy societies covering several of the surnames in his tree. We have a friend who a couple years ago traveled to Salt Lake City to research her family in the records at the LDS family history library.

I guess it wouldn't help me. My husband was a veteran though. The VA helped him get a handicapped license plate. Someone told him the cops were going to give him a ticket for parking in that spot!

When we were Mormons, my husband taught genealogy classes in the LDS church. You don't have to go to SLC; they own ancestry.com. The National Archives had all the census records on microfilm so we stopped going to the Library of Congress.

You people educated this old lady and I'm grateful! I wanted to make sure I actually had had sun chokes next to the house and not a look-alike.

"Helianthus tuberosus is a species of sunflower that produces edible tubers commonly referred to as sunchokes." That's it! How cool!

When "like" is pressed, other options come up.
There are lots more options that aren't working for me now and I don't know why.

Did some yard work yesterday. Trimmed some bushes- junipers and rosemary. Give em a haircut. Raked the front yard- twigs and leaves. Blew down the decks and driveway. We got some rain. Kept the down spouts going half the night. And today I have to go to work. I have to wish I were a younger man. But that wouldn’t help. Pray me joy and strength. God gives strength and wants us to have joy in trials. I’m willing but it’s going to be hard. And do you believe it Paul said to have pleasure in afflictions. Doesn’t it say because when I am weak then I am strong. I am going to be tested on this one. Maybe I learn something. You can teach an old dog new tricks, but it hurts.

Nope, doesn't work for me. I pressed, held, pressed, clicked. All that happens anytime I do so is that the thumbs-up is given. No other options come up. I use a tablet, maybe that makes a difference. Or maybe I should try a different browser.

Paul definitely knew what he was talking about! Hope your workday turned out okay.

Saw my first hummingbird of the spring this morning. It was barely light outside. Got some pictures with my camera, need to download them to see what shows up. He was across the yard, flitting about, and the lighting wasn't good. Then went grocery shopping and the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile showed up! I took a picture but didn't wander over to look. I heard they were giving away whistles. Now if they were giving hotdogs I might have made myself go over. ;)

One of my cherry tomatoes has a bloom.

I tried to attract hummingbirds then gave up. I saw my first ever close-up last year. I was shocked. I thought they were smaller. Maybe I'll see another when my bee balm blooms.

I have all my flowers in the house. I'm anxious for our warm-up this weekend (in the 70's).
