  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Johnny jump ups. Light blue. Violets are a classic of culture. Daffodils are our earliest. White and yellow how kind.
Johnny-Jump-Ups look like baby pansies:

I planted some bulbs called Glories of the Snow, not very many, and they bloom before the daffodils.

What are' johnny jumps up'?

Your flowers sound so pretty. My garden is a mess at the moment. It needs clearing, but I've hurt my hip recently so everything's a bit difficult.

I hope everyone is okay. :)View attachment 330323
I'm so very sorry! I hope you heal soon.

I don't garden much anymore. But the bulbs I planted years ago come back every spring.

previous post has a link to johnny-jump-ups, perennials.

Oh thank you Rescued One for your kind wishes. Nice to 'talk' to you again. I haven't been on GE much recently.

My senior moments abound! I missed your link to johnny-jumps-up! They look very pretty. I'm glad your bulbs reappear each year. I thought mine would but they didn't - another senior moment, I dumped some other stuff on top of them. :doh:I usually do hanging basket and troughs with annuals, but this year I don't have the motivation - maybe it's my hip; I think I'll plant perennials from now on.

I've just realised that I've added an attachment, on my previous post, to a blank page! Oh well, you know about me and modern technology.:help:^_^

92 degrees would kill me. I'm glad we we don't get too many days like that. My brothers can handle them in Miami.

The deer wouldn't let me grow squash or cucumbers, but I'm too old now anyway. I think our forecast has changed: no frost.

I like wild violets, too, but there aren't any in my yard, I ordered Johnny-jump-up seeds. I love them.

92 degrees is tolerable. There've been years we've passed 100 in April. Love it or hate it, you do get used to it. We have good chances for rain over the next 4-5 days. We really need it.

I don't know where the wild violets came from, they just appeared under some shrubs! I try to dig them up each year and plant them where I can see them. For making such tiny seeds, they do spread.

A neighbor showed me her Johnny-jump-ups last spring. She said she'd give me some leftover seeds, but alas! I should order some for next year. Or can you plant the seeds in the fall?

Have you ordered from this seller for some time? It's a new one to me. ;) I always worry about buying online from someone new, but want to give this one a try.

Ferry Morse sells Johnny Jump Up seeds. They probably sell them at Walmart and Lowes. Anywhere you see a rack of seeds. I don't know how far south they grow, but I didn't order them from the site I borrowed the photo.

When I lived in northern Virginia, I planted them next to the chimney of our wood burning fireplace on the east side of our house. They loved that spot!

I tried planting camellias and azaleas under oaks because of shade and acid soil.
Oh, wonderful southern plants that won't grow here! But I think a neighbor has a rhododendron.

Did they grow? My daughter didn't realize new trees and shrubs don't like droughts when newly planted.

I think I kept them watered but maybe the oaks were too much
I've never grown them. But I have evergreens, dogwood trees, a Japanese lilac tree, and an ornamental pear tree in my yard. There were zero trees and nothing besides a few weeds and no grass when we bought our house. I had to plant everything myself because my husband had a bad back. I made lots of mistakes and now I need to have some things removed.

I'm a total mess with technology!

I'm sorry about your bulbs. I understand senior moments all too well and try to hide some of my mistakes.

I didn't buy the seeds for myself; if I get them to grow, I want to give then to my great- granddaughters.

I get about strong women. So able and willing. So smart and creative. Etc,etc.

But as for dogwoods such a perfect choice. I found one in an experimental forest, blooming. And promptly broke off parts of branches to take home. What an Asian experience that was. They seem like Japanese art.

I think Walmart and Lowe's sell Johnny-Jump-Ups as potted plants.

Maybe in some parts of the world! ;) Neither seeds nor plants at either here. Our regional local garden center says they're unavailable at our store. I did find seeds at one of the storefronts I buy from on Amazon, 5,000 seeds for less than $7. I'll have to wait till fall to plant, and save some for next spring.

Wish I could grow a dogwood. The heat would overwhelm it. They grow in the forest of deep southeast Texas where my dad was from. Saw them often when we visited my grandparents when I was a kid. Beautiful small trees.

SE Texas sounds humid. Am I right? This was forest, but dry and drought tolerant. I wish I could grow a dw too.
are they natives or introduced down there. It would be worth having just for the spring bloom. Anybody have mocking birds right now?
