Hello!

Can anyone tell me what the SDA view is on Isaiah 66:17:

"Those who consecrate and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following the one in the midst of those who eat the flesh of pigs and rats and other abominable things--they will meet their end together," declares the Lord."

Thank you!

I would not say there is an Adventist view but when I was in pastoral employ I often used that text to argue against the eating of pork. The subliminal message was that "meet their end together" referred to hell fire. I would not make the same argument today, but I am sure there are some who do.

I copied this from the The 1599 Geneva Study Bible I hope that it helps.

66:17 They that sanctify (r) themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one [tree] in the midst, eating (s) swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD.

(r) Meaning, the hypocrites.
(
s) By which are meant them that maliciously transgressed the law, by eating beasts forbidden, even to the mouse which nature abhors.

I guess one could say that Adventists view this passage as further evidence in support of their prohibition against the consumption of pork products. Whether that is a "position" I can't say.
I think that the text has greater meaning then a prohibition against the eating of pork products.

I was waiting for you to go on and tell us what that greater meaning is. Simply stating that it exists does not help the discussion.

Sentipente: Do SDAs believe that those who eat swine are not saved? This is not meant to be a trick question (I myself don't eat pork) - I truly want to learn the SDA view.
I am sure there are a few who do but I have never known that to be part of Adventist theology.

The eat of the flesh of pigs and rats I believe is talking about a class of people. This class does not follow the Biblical standard because they are eating unclean food thus making them unclean.

Fremen,
I would never tell someone that they are not saved because they eat unclean food. That is for God to decide. And they need to be convicted by the Holy Spirit about this issue. Something that they need to study for themselves and to be fully convinced about.

The relationship with Christ comes first, and then you study and grow in faith and continue to add to that.

I hope I am not confusing things for you. I just used the Geneva Bible because it came up in the search engine. I myself use the NKJV.

The only thing you added was that they are unclean. Where is the greater meaning you promised?

Jesus said its not what a person eats that makes them unclean, but what comes out of their mouth.... would that factor in somewhere?

Stormy,

I just think that Isaiah was using the analogy to represent a class of people.

Hmm, interesting that in 1599 they had the correct view of the meaning of the verse. The key here was in the words "sanctify themselves"--these are people who are self-righteous. They go behind the tree where they think people won't see and they eat foul meat for food, even the mouse. The verse goes on to say that they will meet their end in hell.

DJ,

I think you hit the nail on the head with that one. Great explanation.

Are you similarly suggesting that [bible]Leviticus 20:7[/bible] was a call to self-righteousness?
