Good post!Well, here is my understanding:
Apostate Jews were combining paganism with the worship of God. Even in doing this, they fooled themselves into thinking that such practices made them holy, or sanctified. The consecration and purification ceremonies described here are distinctly heathen practices. Such vile ceremonies were almost always practiced in gardens and groves, much like many Masonic rituals which are practiced today (hello Skull And Bones secret societies, I'm talking about you.) The tree is in reference to the fact that the pagans used tree worship in thier rites. These apostate Jews, who knew better, were openly defying Gods Levitical instructions to avoid consuming unclean animals. They were freely indulging in the throwing off of all thier prior restraints and were deluded enough to believe they were being sanctified by the very thing God had explicitly told them would nullify any favor He might show them.
