I am very glad that Saddam has been captured!
He was a miserable despot who tortured and terrorized innocent people, and anyone concerned with human rights should be glad to know he can no longer harm another person. I do hope this reassures some of the Iraqi people who have continued to fear his return and any repercutions that might have come as a result.
I also hope this brings an end to the violence in Iraq, but I don't think it will--at least, not yet. Judging from the conditions in which he was found, can anyone really believe he was calling the shots (no pun intended)? I've been listening to some of the reports about this, and one man in Baghdad made a comment that chilled me. He said that the Iraqi fighters aren't fighting for Saddam. They are fighting for Iraq, and Iraq is still occupied. I hope he's wrong. I worry he's right.
At any rate, this capture is a good thing.
It will be fascinating to watch what happens next.
And now I must add my disclaimer:
The above post not to be construed as unquestioning support of Bush's foreign policy. While anyone concerned about human rights should be glad to see the end of a despotic rule, that doesn't translate into agreement with an administration that seemingly has a poor grasp on utilizing diplomacy and working cooperatively with other countries.
