  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am going to venture to say that an individual may observe the Saturday sabbath as individual piety but it is on Sunday that our sense of sabbath must be kept. See the Orthodox understanding of the 10 commandments ( Decalogue) by St. Gregory ( Palamas, 14th c.)on the 4th commandment:

Decalog. - 1 - St Gregory Palamas

that's not what I meant, the Sabbath points us to Christ, for a very specific reason. you at least seem to be looking at the Sabbath apart from that.

Why do you keep insisting this? I already told you several times that I worship Christ on the sabbath. Christ is my God and King. I am a Christian and Christ is everything to me. I don’t know why you keep insulting me like this. It seems to be some kind of pride on your part.

If you rightly kept the sabbath, no one would care or notice unless you bring attention to yourself. That attention you draw on yourself would be your only reward.

It’s not a matter of attention and it’s rather insulting that you would insinuate that it is.

It’s a matter of having consistent doctrine and theology with the Church that I attend so we are in proper fellowship.

It’s also likely that the issue could come up in conversation and it’s definitely something I should discuss with the Priest as I go through the conversion process.

I don't think anyone is arguing with you on this. We're all saying some form of "You don't have to, but you can."

Alright then I guess that is your answer. In the Orthodox Church sabbath keeping is a matter of personal preference.

Is it your argument that some of us are in the wrong for not keeping the sabbath because Abbot Tryphon wrote that we should a couple years ago?

Obviously as a sabbath keeper I think that it is an important doctrine. If I didn’t think sabbath keeping was important I wouldn’t have created this thread and I wouldn’t be asking.

and what I have been saying has nothing to do with when you choose to worship Christ, or that you do it on a Saturday.

You misunderstood. Keep the sabbath, just don't go around banging drums and bringing attention to yourself as a "sabbath keeper" and you should be fine. That's all I'm saying.

It’s a matter of having consistent doctrine and theology with the Church that I attend so we are in proper fellowship.

The Church does have a doctrine and theology in regards to the Sabbath, as @ArmyMatt keeps trying to tell you. That the doctrine of Church doesn't exactly match your own views is something you'll have to wrestle with yourself and God. The Church isn't going to change Her views to suit you. You (well, we, and not you perhaps) change our views to align with the Church.

It’s also likely that the issue could come up in conversation and it’s definitely something I should discuss with the Priest as I go through the conversion process.

Many Protestants who convert were iconoclasts. They eventually got over it. You may value keeping the sabbath, while the Church says the Sabbath is Someone else. That you'll have to wrestle with God about.

Catholic, but still:

I have studied this issue for many years. I am well aware of what the Catholic position is and I understand the arguments that most Sunday keepers make.

I used to be Roman Catholic and was confirmed in their faith. I left the Catholic Church because I disagree with some of their theology.

I’m more interested in discussions on the Orthodox Church position than I am in watching a Roman Catholic video.

In regards to the Sabbath, the Papists and we share the same view, pretty much which is why I posted it.

Well then why don’t you write a longer post and clarify yourself instead of just breezing by with short blips that are unclear and don’t really contribute to the discussion.

saying that the Sabbath points to Christ because of His rest in the Tomb is pretty clear. I dunno how much clearer I can make it.

I understand what you are saying and I can assure you that I wouldn’t go around “banging drums”. On the other hand I’m not particularly interested in hiding in the shadows and it would be wonderful to find a Church to fellowship with that I am in agreement with.

Yes, we don't designate it to Saturday. We try to remember the sabbath everyday.

I’ve heard this statement many times now and I understand that our sabbath rest is in Christ and that the sabbath points to him. But that still doesn’t answer the question at hand as to whether or not members of the Orthodox Church observe the sabbath.
