  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi everyone! I used to run cross country when I was a kid, I also was a (very mediocre) sprinter and did a lot of running for gymnastics training. I haven't done ANY running since then (except from Jesus:blush: !).

Seven months ago I quit smoking and I have gained a lot of weight- 35 pounds- aaack!!

Two weeks ago I blew a good chunk of change on a good pair of runners and I started training for the Vancouver 10 k sun Run. I'm mostly walking right now, doing the 30 sec. run, 4 min. 30 sec. walk first week, then shift 30 more seconds from walking to running each week. I'm really excited about this.

Oh by the way, I won't be running in the actual race since it's too far away but I am still training and going to run it here at home nonetheless.
hey new creation!
the vancouver 10km sun run was my very first long distance race! i ran the race in 2000. prior to the race i had no experience with long distance running and so i joined a running clinic which specifically trained us for the vancouver sun run; so i am totally familiar with what you are doing. the sun run training is one that i would highly recommend to people who've never run before and want to start. after i ran the sun run, i screwed up my right knee and stopped running for a few years, until last september. i'm training for a half marathon and my goal is to run in the nyc marathon. do you live in vancouver? i grew up there but have been living here in new jersey for the past three and a half years. :)

thanks new creation! :) i haven't had any problems with my knee yet so please keep praying! i've started running longer on the weekends as it gives me more time then. over the past few saturdays, i've been able to build up to running for an hour straight. my new goal now is to run up to an hour and a half straight. :) and yeah, it was a bit of a culture shock at the beginning, but i'm used to it now. i've assimilated into the east coast culture! ;) i love the east coast and hope to settle down here. i am currently working on grad school applications and am hoping to get into some schools in new york city and so i may be moving to new york city this september.....my dream!!!

Hey guys!

I'm not much of a runner, I'll be honest...
But last year myself and 4 friends did the Belfast Marathon relay to raise money for a friend going to Kenya on a summer mission. I thoroughly enjoyed it...when the weather was good. Now I hope to go on a mission this summer and my friends have agreed to help me out and run with me to do the relay again to raise some funds.
But this year I have been lazy, mostly due to my placement job, my sporting schedule has been reduced significantly... :(

I know I can run the 5 odd miles that I'll need to easily enough, but I'd hate to do it and be slower than last year!
So any tips to motivate me to get out and do a bit of running before the marathon comes round? Especially when it is cold/raining (as it all too often is here in N Ireland!)

when i joined this site i dived straight in here expecting to find at least a running thread somewhere near the top of the list.... but no, all i find is weight loss whinging & dodgy nutritional supplements!

i'm sure there must be some runners like me out there.... or wannabes.

so own up you lot.

I run 5 miles a day. It usually takes me just over an hour. And unfortunately it takes about an hour before the endorphins kick in. That's why 5 is the magic number as far as I'm concerned.

keep running you lot...

did my first race of the year yesterday... bit of a long one.

smashed my marathon personal best down to 3:50 and then slowed right down to complete the 35miles in 5:30. winning time was 3:40!!!! awesome.

not the times or distances matter in the grand scheme of things.. running is a state of mind. ;)

Ed -

I can't believe I didn't notice this thread earlier. I am an avid runner. I've run a lot of races over the years - including one marathon (the marine corps marathon in Washington DC). I'll be honest - I'm not the fastest guy in the pack - my goals are usually for distance rather than time. I spend a heck of a lot of time on the road.

My daily work-outs have dropped down to between 1 1/2 to 3 miles a day - which is a bummer. I took some time off over the holidays and seem to be having a hard time getting my distance back up. I usually run 3 to 6 miles a day - with a long run (10-20) miles once every two weeks. Its the first time I noticed my age kicking in. I used to be able to take a couple of weeks off and then only take a couple of weeks to get back up to my normal training distances. Hopefully I'll get back up there soon...

Don't like running, but military requirement. So...
run 3-4x week, we always vary the mileage. min is two miles max can be 6 or so.
the variety has made a large difference in entertaining me during the workout.
I like doing steps, intervals and often mixed run (run 2 miles, 15-20min cals, run 1mile 15 min cals, 1 mile 14min cals, then 2 miles)
most of the time we do the 2-4 mile runs after 30 min cals & stretching.
that leaves me 1hour to lift weights. something most runners avoid. hmmm
all and all though i hate the running it does help and when mixed w/ lifting it keeps my weight down, and body healthy
cheers

behe: i guess you have to adjust things as you get older, over here most of the top finishers in half-marathons & longer are vets (40+)! so you still have time to peak ;) rest is important, maybe need more rest and better quality sessions.

site: what are cals? sounds like your routine is closer to a triathlete training prog. with the weights & stuff

that's pretty cool. our services have some things, but mostly independent. we use to all the sports and you'd travel and compete other bases and such. the cost was too much for leadership, i guess, its now dead

the special forces dudes I worked w/ from the UK did a lot of running and swimming. a few were lifters. I ran on and off with them. i just didn't have the distance desire they did, every day

I do like to run, but haven't done much in the past 1.5 yrs on this. The last trainer I worked with in 2002 had me done squats that were far too heavy for me and my body was changing because I had just gotten pregnant. This caused some injury to my knees. They have never felt the same after working out with him. BTW, shortly after I stopped training with him because he didn't listen to me and was causing me to get injured.

In college while I was playing racquetball for the university, I took up running to improve my speed and agility in the court. Hated it the whole time. But, in '98 I took it up again since it was something I could do anywhere, anytime with good running shoes. I got fitted for running shoes for the way I run and that made a huge difference. I couldn't even run 1 block, even though I exercised regularly with weights, did all those cardio classes. I gradually built up and was soon running 5K's every other weekend.

It was awesome to get the runner's high and I would often just put my shoes and running clothes on and go run for an hour. At my best, I could do 5 miles in an hr. Was a fairly slow runner, but that was ok to me. My goal with every 5K was to do better than the time before, if only by a few seconds. It became addictive.

I miss running and getting into the great outdoors, but here in the Phoenix area, it's so darned hot right now I hate leaving any A/C'd place. Today should be cooler at 105 degrees F....ughh...

When I'm no longer nursing and much lighter, I'll try to see if my knees feel better and take up running again. I do have this goal before 40 to complete a marathon and a triathlon. Four years left. In the meantime, I'm babying my knees and working on strengthening them, and not doing anything to make them worse.

Greetings in the Matchless Name of YahShua [that's the name Jesus was called by His mom, dad, brothers, sisters, disciples and others who loved Him] !!

You could pick up one of those mini trampolines. 20 or so minutes on one of those with a little adjustment can't hardly be beat for overall fitness. No stress to the joints, either. Of course, no runner's rush or endorphins this way but if fitness is your goal then trampolining is the way to go!

Also, 40 is the age when a high percentage of Americans show zero levels of chromium in their tissues and that leads to all kinds of problems. Running causes depletion of chromium levels. FYI, chromium picolinate is a slow poison so that supplement hurts more than it helps.

oh give it a break servant!

mdolls:
hi! if you trained for ironman before you're 40 you could kill two birds with one stone... literally :D
don't blame you about the hot weather, it really screws my races cos i dont have that much opportunity to train in the heat.. if i was living in it however, things might be different. i have a friend who is going to arizona for new year to do a 24hr race!
if i've learnt anything in my running/triathlons it's that you can do most things with a sensible approach and a positive mental attitude (and yes.. good nutrition servant).
distance running is dominated by the older generation, and women have some advantage over silly distances... so i'd say you're about ready to peak ;)
