  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

halfs as in half-marathons

shin-splints can be crippling, i've kept running on them but ice & rest will help.

treadmills: i use 1.5% for general stuff and 1% for speed work. some will say its to make up for air resistance, and maybe it does but the bigger issue is that running on the road you lean forward whilst on a treadmill you're pretty much totally upright. Which is slightly different mechanically for your legs/muscles.... it'd only possibly cause a problem if you train mostly on a treadmill and then race on the road, as it may be different enough to cause problems.

PS danielB.. what you got ?

I am about due for a new pair of running shoes. The ones i have now are speaking to me and I really don't want to injure myself as I am starting to run for longer distances and longer amounts of time. Does anyone have any good suggestions for a flat-footed runner prone to pronation? (heheh...pardon the pun) ;) :D

suck it & see S&C...
..find a good running shop and try some motion-control shoes designed for pronation (which is what most people do).... make sure they fit like a glove (but on your feet obviously)

if it helps i currently do most of my miles in saucony, previously asics and still have some lightweight asics for shorter distances.

thanks ed_m. :) my current running shoes are saucony and i love them! i bought them about two years ago at this store called the running room in vancouver. since i will be going home for the holidays i think i will go back there and look for another pair. i've tried new balance before, however they did not give the the support that i needed.

just wondering.....how many miles do you run per week?

Wow, that's alot of running! I'm only on about 15-18 per week. Since I want to run a half marathon possibly this spring, I need to do some reading on proper marathon training. Got any suggestions?

Hey, you're young to be starting competitive triathlon!

Before we launch into 'tips and advice' for you, let us know how much you've done already, what you basic fitness level is like, and how much training you'd normally put into a week.

Okay... I ran cross country for the first time this past fall... I am not fast, but I love running. I have never swam ( swum? I can't ever tell which to use :) ) competitively, but I have swam laps for just basic exercise. Biking... again, never competitively, but just for fun. This is a sprint tri- I think it is about a 1/2 mile swim, 11 mile bike ride, and 3 mile run.

Training wise... for now I only want to do five days per week, about 6 hours per week. The only time of day I have to work out is the mornings, so that is why my time is so limited. After March (when soccer is over), I should be able to up my training A LOT. I just need some actual numbers as to how many miles I should be running, biking, swimming, etc..., speed workouts for all three, etc... I don't know what a good time would be for the swimming and biking part, but for the running, I would really love to get under a 24 minute 5k, even around 21 would be within my goals. The fastest two mile I ever ran during cross country was really slow, but good for me 14:12, so I don't know if 21 is too optimistic, but I really want to do it. Thanks for the advice!
