  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I play ultimate frisbee, and anyone who knows that game knows there's tons of running. What I do after a tournament is lay on the floor and prop my legs in a chair. It causes all the lactic acid/toxins stuff to run down, and my legs aren't nearly as sore the next day.

but i would dunk my legs in an ice cold bath (as cold as you can manage)... this technique is used by several good distance runners.. and is said to speed muscle recovery (i can vouch for this), allowing the next training session to be harder/more effective.

as for why, my theory is that the cold causes the blood to rush away from the surface, flushing all the lactic acid & toxins out of the muscles. Similar to a post run (effluage) (spelling?) massage.
Cold shower does the same as dunking your legs in ice water, only it's your whole body. I spoke to the guy that suggested it, I figured the same with the lactic acid, his rationale was that it constacts muscles and stimulates blood flow.

yeh but it's only your legs that have been working.. oh and i'm a wuss. (i thought blood flow shut down when exposed to cold to save losing too much heat from the surface)

yup.. raising the legs is also good for draining the junk out.. i did it during breaks in a long race recently.. until i couldnt get up anymore, then i stopped laying down :D

is this why america doesnt have many international distance runners? cos they all shot their legs to peices at school?

Gotcha. The difference then, is that I'm taking the cold shower after a three hour total body workout, not just a run, so it makes sense in my situation, not necessarily as good for just a runner.

I dont know any medical facts that back up your theory but we used to run along the james river and as soon as we were done with the run we would just sit on a rock and let our legs hang off into the ice cold water and it does wonders for your legs and knees and feet.

I agree with ed. Starting out slow with a realistic distance can make it less torture and more fun. I love to run because I have been doing it for years and my body is accustomed to it. At first it was a little painful, but there is a chemical that is released from physical activity that strenuous (the imfamous "runners high") that really does give a euphoric feeling. Plus it's great for your cardio-vascular system and for burning calories. It's worth the initial investment to get to the point where you can really let go and enjoy it.
I also like in-line skating for crosstraining.

For some reason, I don't like running, but I love biking for distance. Both use your legs, but I guess running is higher impact.

After thinking for a moment more, when I'm on a bike I am going a bit quicker to get away from dogs.

One important thing about running also is to go and buy a pair of shoes that are fitted for your feet. I recommend going to a running specialty store where you take in an old pair of running shoes and they watch you walk etc..and get a shoe made for your foot. That really helps alot.

I run every other day and it feels really good. It's something really mindless to do but it's not boring. The rich satisfaction of feeling it hurt afterwards is the best. I usually go when I don't feel like doing homework because that's like an hour break (including cool down and shower).

Im a runner. Ive been struggling as of late so I stopped trying to outdo my times and distances and maintain my routine.

Things have changed quite a bit in my house as of late so my routine is adjusting. I usually hit the trail 3-5x a week and run 3 miles on a trail near the house.

What makes or breaks a running career are poor shoes. I bought some NB and they were HORRIBLE! they hurt my feet, had no give at all and I changed the soles out 3x. I had blisters on my toes and arches. I finally took them back (Just For Feet) and had someone really help me find something suitable for my feet.
Ended up with Nike Max air and from the moment I put them on, I noticed 100% difference.

My last event was the 10k MS walk. Ive not signed up for a run as of yet but maybe one day :)

PS: Running went hand in hand in loosing my 78lbs

I've had the same complaint with New Balance sneakers. I wouldn't recommend them, although the gray ones are pretty fashionable . . . but that's besides the point. I really like the Asics I have now. I'm not sure if you're supposed to pronounce it "Asics" or "Basics" because it has that little b-shaped squiggly in front. It totally throws me off.

I had gotten the NB 475 and even the shoe store couldnt believe it was a running shoe because it had no give what so ever and they were flat on the bottom.

My nikes are awesome. they are so comfortable I wear them everywhere. Too bad they were an ugly powder blue. Whats UP with running shoe colors? Blech hehe.
