  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

What? None of you run barefoot? Whenever I run in grass, sand, and some times even asphault I run barefoot, it is great on soar ankles. But on dirt and gravel I sport some Nike Trekkers and for races Nike Cross Contry Waffles. I don't race anymore, however, now I am a fun runner. ;)

seraph: 8 months is plenty of time to prepare for a marathon.. even starting from scratch (which you're not).

what do you do and how often at the moment? any injuries or niggles? do you have some decent shoes?
i started out really slow back in september, starting with the run/walk routine and then slowly building up to eventually running the whole entire time. right now i am running 3 times a week and have built up to running approximately 40 minutes straight. my goal is to run for an hour right now. i live in the east coast (jersey) and since the weather is freezing cold right now, i've had to resort to running on the treadmill at the gym. right now i'm running about 12 miles a week. before i started running again i had a knee injury which resulted from a 10k race that i did back in 2000 and so i stopped running until this past september. right now my knees are not bothering me, however, i did notice after my last run on wednesday that my right knee was sore for the first time. also, when i first start running my left hip was incredible sore afterwards but a physical therapist friend of mine showed me some stretches i could do to help alleviate the soreness. i'm flat footed and so i have to buy special sneakers - my sneakers at the moment are saucanoys and they've fared me quite well, however they are starting to speak to me ;) which means that it's time for a new pair. my last pair of running shoes were new balance and although i bought them at a specialty running store, the supports were not sufficient; hence the screwed up right knee. anyways, do you have any suggestions? do you really think it's feasible for me to do the nyc marathon next year? or do you think a half marathon would be more realistic?

hey, if P-Diddy can run the city, you can run the marathon.

www.diddyrunsthecity.com

He's a non-runner that did it on 8 weeks training (yeah, he has millions of dollars behind him) but you've got a longer timeline.

I can't run because of a blown disk in my lower back (no impact, you know, or else I have some fun times for the next few days), but I have a DyGuard Lifewalker contraption (think about the Gazelle machine they sell on infomercials, it's pretty much the same principle) that my girlfriend got for $5 at work. I can go an hour on it without stopping, with the resistence set to the highest levels. As fast as I go, it feels like running.

I haven't done it since early October... maybe it's time I get back to it. :)

I like to run to keep fit and would like to do it more but am having probs with my splints atm so no running for me, think I need to get some new running shoes which should help.

Its really annoying as I get a week or twos running done but then get too sore to run and have to stop and wait till it gets better, so I've not run for a while as I can't be bothered with the cycle of pain :(

absolutely feasible.... and dont worry you'll be wanting to do a couple of halfs in the run-up.

the only issue is time & commitment as you'll probably be working up to 40miles a week or more... and it does require a slightly selfish single mindedness to keep it up!

PS running in the cold is ace with the right kit, and i'm usually too warm after 20mins or so. I've run down to -10c but after that it's just silly..

The shin splints go away if you keep running. Your body won't get used to the impact of running unless you keep it up.

Hey guys, I heard some opposing views on this, but some folks tell me that when running on a treadmill, I should set it for at least 1% inclone to compensate for the help I'm getting from the belt. Some say running is running, doesn't matter.

I'm all "huh?". So I've been working on an incline, because I don't know what the downside would be.
