  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I kinda get a kick out of how you mention a lot of names and condemn them as errors when you clearly have no understanding of them. You list a bunch of Catholic sounding stuff and call it an 'error'- I doubt you know very much about them at all, much less could construe an argument against them.

What I find particularly funny is your mentioning of the filoque, which is acknowledged by virtually all protestant churches... telling me you really don't know what you are talking about.
I am not the one that personally brought up anything in that list.

These were brought up by others, so leave me out of it :D

You are comparing the wrong things.

I was responding to NoDoubt's words:
"Do you mean like dinosaur bones? They are REALLY old!"

I have no doubt that bones can be mumified but this is not 'like (what happens to) dinosaur bones' which is fossilization
I am sorry. That was a quick "drive-by"post :sorry:  I know that dinosaur bones fossilize and turn to stone.

Here is a better example of preserved skeletal remains.

Kennewick Man estimated to be up to 9,000 years old.

There are countless ancient bones found throughout the world prefectly preserved. They don't have to belong to a 'saint'. That's all I was trying to point out.

About the candles, there was a Menorah in the Tent of the Meeting and Temple. ;) (it had 7 lights)

Jews and Messianics light two candles when Sabbath starts. ;) There are also two candles on the altar table (cuz Mass is a mini-Passover).

Anywho, not that candles really matter.

About relics, well, I think most of us really like to possess something (or a few things) which belonged to someone whom we loved or a family member who passed on... Some of us even keep a loved ones ashes in their living room or bedroom. ;)

Just sayin'

It's not monstrous to honour/keep 'relics' of people! :D Relics, in reality, are a dead person's bones! Those were viewed as very precious by early Christians - those who lived in the Catacombs. These Christians, after their brothers/sisters in Christ were martryred in the Coliseum of Rome, longed to receive what bones remained of them as they viewed them as being more precious than gold... ;)

If relics don't matter, why do we go to funeral homes to honour our dead and why do we have funeral services that follow? I mean, seriously...

If Catholicism/Orthodoxy are sooo Pagan, then why do you, if a Protestant, observe Sunday worship as opposed to the Sabbath rest? Why do you celebrate Christmas, have Christmas trees, mistletoe, and all this Xmas stuff? Why do you bother with Easter? ;) Ain't it all Pagan?

Why are statues and images so horrific? Don't you use statutory in your nativity scenes, if you are an iconoclast? Don't you use drawing/paintings of Jesus and all other Biblical figures for your Sunday Schools?

Are we to throw all Christian art out the window?

Are we to throw art, whether religious or secular, out the window? Doesn't art, whether religious or secular, depict nature scenes/elements (with trees, flowers, animals, etc.) and people?

What did God mean when He meant to not make ourselves graven images of anything in the heavens, or on the Earth? He just didn't want us to create some false god(s) for ourselves in order to put our trust in them/worship them.

Have all of you rejected art? :D

Don't many, many Prots draw, paint and collect art? :D

Also, don't you have picture albums! What about photography?

lol some of you are too funny!

I was watching 'Lost cities' of Rome some months ago and they have alot of the Roman world uncovered [ancient Rome] and there are gorgeous icons in the first Churches....with altars and other stuff..such as prayers for the dead.
[Which made me chuckle when the ppl who were doing the tours] didnt know how to take that...:D

First off, kudos, for being one of the few non-Roman Catholic/non-Orthodox persons I've seen on here that defended both Roman Catholicism and Orthodoxy (hey, some things we still have in common).

Even today in Orthodox parishes, a relic of a saint is sealed within the altar. Some relics are also in churches outside of the altar itself. The treasures of an Orthodox church are not the gold and metallic things like the censer and so forth, but the treasures of any Orthodox church or monastery are the relics kept within the church or monastery.

Why are statues and images so horrific? Don't you use statutory in your nativity scenes, if you are an iconoclast? Don't you use drawing/paintings of Jesus and all other Biblical figures for your Sunday Schools?

The main reason that we have icons are as evidence that God truly did become man. A few others, but this isn't a thread on iconography, is it?

SO Christ being born and Rising are pagan..?

WOW.
Here thot this was about the Lord...never mind the fact as Paul said he becomes a pagan to save a pagan....
ANd fwiw, that meant taking pagan practices and turning them into Christian uses...

Hey they did it then, and the custom is with us.

YOU might think the customs evolved much later..but most had already converted by the Apostles time.

God can and does use HIS own creation as He sees fit.

Here's my question....

WHO created the Tree, or the egg, or the chick or rabbit????

IT wasnt a pagan... so why should satan take credit and thus thru our refusal to understand how God uses these things [of course to his advantage] is then giving credit to satan for their existence.
