“Teach me Your way, O Lord,
And lead me in a level path
Because of my foes.
Do not deliver me over to the desire of my adversaries,
For false witnesses have risen against me,
And such as breathe out violence.
I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord;
Be strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the Lord.” (Psalm 27:11-14 NASB1995)
I am nearing age 76. Most of my life I spent participating in various areas of Christian ministry within the structure of the institutional church, which is incorporated (joined, merged, combined) with the government and with the world. I had no knowledge about that then, and much later I learned that God forbids such unions. Twice my husband and I were engaged in church planting efforts within these incorporated churches under the government, as well, but we were mostly ignorant of the influence of those associations.
But in 1999 the Lord began opening my eyes to see what was going on in the name of “church” and in the name of “Christ” and of his gospel message. I began to see the worldliness which had crept into the church and how so many church gatherings, regardless of church denomination affiliation, were all following the same marketing and church growth business models for how to “grow their churches” and for how to “draw in large crowds of people from the world.” But it still took me awhile to really grasp the nature of it all.
As time progressed, I began to realize more and more what had taken place and how much of the church was now consumed by these affiliations and their influences on the character and the witness of the church in the world, as well as on the teaching of the gospel. And really, this had been going on my whole life, but I was just slow at catching on to it all. For example, as a child we were being taught in the church to vow our allegiance to the government and to sing patriotic songs of worship to the US government.
Now, we moved around a lot. I am now living in my 30th residence. My husband and I have lived in 5 different US states in 10 different cities, and we have participated in multiple different institutional churches of various church denominations within our 53 years of marriage. So we have a wide range of experience in positions of ministry within these church fellowships. And I have listened to many different preachers and their sermons over the years, as well, from many different parts of the USA and denominations.
And more and more the Lord began opening my eyes to see the spiritual and the moral decline in these institutional churches married to the government, which were now marketing their “churches” to the world, and which were now altering the gospel of Christ to appease human flesh. And so many were making professions of faith in Jesus Christ superficially without being crucified with Christ in death to sin, and without walks of obedience to his commands, and so many were succumbing to the sinful desires of the flesh.
Now, the closer I drew to my Lord in my relationship with him, and the stronger that my faith became, and the more that the Lord kept showing me what was going on within these institutional churches and how sin was now being accepted, and death to sin and obedience to God and to his commands was largely being rebuked and disdained, or treated as optional; and the more that I stood on the truth of God’s word and that I rebuked the lies of the enemy, the more that I faced opposition from worldly “Christians.”
But all of us who profess faith in Jesus Christ should desire to know the ways of the Lord, which we can learn about in the Scriptures taught in the correct biblical context. And we should want to be shown if we are following after lies and if we are giving worship to idols, and if we are in ungodly unions which God forbids and which he tells us to come out from among them. And 12 years ago the Lord pulled me out of the “institutional church,” but I am still a member of the body of Christ, still ministering to his true church.
So test what you are hearing from these “institutional market-driven churches in partnership with the government and with the world.” Test them against the teachings of the Scriptures, taught in context. God forbids such unions as this, and he forbids turning his church into a place of business. And he instructs us in the Scriptures to come out from among them, not only physically, but spiritually and biblically in our thinking and believing, too. And ask the Lord to teach you HIS way, taught us in the Scriptures.

Walk With Me
By Al Langdon and P.J. Zondervan
Walk with me, walk with me,
Lest mine eyes no longer see
All the glory, all the story of Your love;
Talk to me, talk to me,
Like You spoke so tenderly,
When You talked there,
When You walked there by the sea.
Talk to me, talk to me,
Lest mine ears no longer hear
All the wonder, all the beauty of Your grace;
Walk with me, walk with me,
As You walked so lovingly,
When You walked there,
When You talked there by the sea.
Let me follow in the footsteps
That trod the shore of Galilee,
Let me learn to pray like He did
In the Garden of Gethsemane;
Take my hand, take my hand,
Teach me Lord to understand,
All the duty, all the beauty of Your love.
