I have never understood why Roman Polansky was not extradited to stand trial. France and Poland both acted abhorrently in this matter.

I don't care how much people like his movies. He is an admitted rapist of an underage girl, for which he shows no remorse, only crocodile tears. It is shocking that people treat this man with such respect. He is a criminal, nothing more.

IIRC, it wasn't considered a violent crime, which means it's much less likely to result in extradition.

When you get a child so stoned they can't move and rape them I guess it wouldn't be that violent.

I guess Poland and France are ok with those types of rapist.

Yup. He fled after finding out his plea would be rejected and then succesfully fought off extradition procedures in France and Poland. He pled guilty to the charges by the way, but expected to be treated leniently because of his wealth and celebrity.

No he pled guilty, but a plea bargain had been struck whereby he would only serve 90 days of psychiatric evaluation in a posh clinic and probation if he did so. The judge then decided this was too light and was going to give him jail time of a few years as well, ie rejected the plea bargain. At this point he then fled his bail and the US has been trying extradite him ever since.

He has been found guilty; legally he is a convicted rapist of a minor. He fled before sentencing, so if he is ever extradited they still need to decide what his punishment will be.

OK. We don't really use plea deals here the same way you guys do, so I wasn't sure how it all works if a plea deal was rejected.

Not American either. I just read up on his case after reading about him when the Pianist came out. I was shocked and appalled. Luckily I didn't like the movie much, Schindler's List is much better.

You thought so? I found the Pianist more moving, the individual tragedy rather than the group statistic. But hey, that's me. That's not to diminish Schindler's list, they were just different.

Honestly I didn't know it was a Polanski work until you just mentioned it. I'd probably heard it mentioned, but I wasn't generally aware of it, you know?
