  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Please excuse this but I can't think of any other way to get this off my chest.

As you all know I do a lot of liturgical proofreading and also do a lot of preparation of texts for myself .

Over the last few years I have built up in DropBox a pretty large collection of 'stuff' not least of which is the Sunday Readings - arranged sort of as Pascha to Pentecost , Pentecost to the Fast , Feast day Readings etc etc - as you can see a LOT of stuff. There have also been copies of Liturgical files - such as Propers for Great and Holy Week 3 years ago - which we kept for reference. The 'we' referred to is my GodPapa and myself.

Some of this was shared in the past with the Deacon who served in our Parish , he didn't have access to some stuff but he did have access to a lot.

I was sitting doing some work on my Laptop just now and got a notification that xxxxxxxx deleted this file , then that file , and more and more . I sat mouth open watching .

Eventually the notifications stopped.

I've just checked my DropBox - yes all that and more has vanished - to say I'm not best pleased is putting it very very mildly. I've been caught out more than once in the past when Father has decided to so something a little unusual without prior warning - and I've had the stuff in DropBox . I ALWAYS have my iPad in Church with me as I have Bi-lingual copy of Liturgy on it - and since the readings were in pdf format they could be accessed offline.

I'VE LOST THE LOT THANKS TO A DEACON WHO DECIDED HE NO LONGER NEEDED SOME STUFF !!

Why didn't he think it necessary to ask me ? Why was he so discourteous enough just to go and delete the stuff ?

You got it :D

Thats a very very appropriate prayer.

If any of the stuff is also used by my GodPapa [ and it's very possible that it is - that Eparchy in the USA , if my GodPapa has any chance of doing anything will have permanently lost a Deacon - and the guy's wife may be needing help coping with her life

TBH - I didn't realise he had access to that file - I'll see what I can do about recovering it - have to admit that it's not often used now - but it would save me hassle if I can get it back.

IF my GodPapa has lost files that way I would really not like to be in a certain Deacon's shoes.

I had mentioned to my GodPapa in the past that next time we were together we needed to look at what was in DropBox and do a bit of culling of files - but we would be talking about it before it was done .

Rob - that bat ain't big enough or heavy enough the way I feel at present

Let's toilet paper his house and egg his car...no wait...that wouldn't be the Christian thing to do. Water balloons maybe...don't know...we need something really good. I say go out and buy him the biggest most succulent chocolate cake you can afford with red and black frosting. Then in icing write this verse:

if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head. (Romans 12:20)
I say let him eat cake, I'd even buy ice cream and invite the whole church.

I'm glad I'm not Catholic, I could go to purgatory for this. I'm going to stop now.

Grace and peace,
Mark

Ugh.
many prayers.

I can relate, somewhat. My seven plus year old home PC started exhibiting the tell-tale signs that it is about to give up the ghost. I purchased a new computer last weekend and have spent the entire morning copying files/data in an effort to save everything of value. Fortunately, most was backed-up to an external drive.
What has proven to be a challenge is some things need a little more manipulation because I'm jumping from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Music folders all transferred but iTunes didn't recognize some of the folders/files and I had to add the folders manually.
There's some applications that will end up having to be replaced because they barely made the compatibility cut when I loaded them on the old machine.. Windows 10 just looked at the dsks and said, "What you talkin' 'bout Willis?"

to say I'm not best pleased with a certain person is really putting it mildly.

I've warned my GodPapa as I don't know to which files of his this person had access. I know that GodPapa has files in Drop Box to which I have no access as they are shared with some clerics in the USA and Canada - and again, have liturgical material in them.

OK I didn't often need access now BUT in an emergency I could always pull stuff up and use it - now I can't - I'll get on this week and see what I can restore - tonight I'm too annoyed and would probably make mistakes - and of course, since it's evening, I have had a sensible modicum of wine with my dinner :)

Let this act as a warning to folk who share files in DropBox - the other person can delete them

There's no way to restore these?

Is there no way to reprimand this person for vandalizing your dropbox?

What if you told him he could help himself to some of what was in your fridge and he threw everything he didn't like into the garbage and then threw the garbage out the window?

Unacceptable. Good luck.

I've had a word with him by email - and he says it didn't ask him if it was a shared folder with anyone else when he told it to delete !!

Anyone using DropBox - you are warned !!

He has apologised - but really 52 weeks of deleted Readings for Liturgy is not fun to rebuild.

Oh well - lesson learned

Lord have mercy!

I hope you can get it back!

And I fear I would not have known either. I hope I've never done such a thing. A certain person shared his Dropbox with me 3 years ago - I wonder if I'd better ask if by any chance I damaged it without meaning to, as I did download everything he shared first. But I don't think I would have deleted in any case. I'm guessing the Deacon didn't know. That doesn't make it easier though.

I do hope you can restore it!

And find a way to ease your justifiable feelings that resulted!

Lord have mercy!!!

Is there not another copy floating around? Maybe on the computer where they were first created or did anyone download them?
I use dropbox routinely I have never put anything on dropbox that didn't 'live' somewhere else as well. I have all of our priest's podcast audio files scattered on three computers, a 500gig external hard drive and dropbox. Even with my computer dying, I'm not concerned about losing those files.
