Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Questions you always wanted to ask a Christian or non believer and remarks are accepted also.

Are you a christian?

I have no trouble accepting that there was someone called Jesus, probably a rabbi, who lived around the time of the biblical Jesus. I see the Jesus story as a mixture of truth, half-truth and myth. Something similar happened with Mohammed.

So the eye witnesses all through the nt doesn't give you pause?
I'm guessing you go to Gay Mardi Gras. ;)

OB
Lol, if that was true would it be a sin for a Christian, i ask of a theist. What's the difference between a theist and a atheist? I feel a joke coming on, lol

So there is something in my life that comes around once a year. It's not clearly designated in the word that it is a sin but i think it is. So only once a year and unsure of it's sin am i condemned if i participate?
If you think it's a sin and you do it anyway, that in itself is sin. But I would advise you to try to resolve your uncertainty, perhaps in the first instance by seeking the input of others.

So it seems to me that we both have a choice at hand, an easy choice really. Go to the right, blind faith and to the left no faith at all. Everything must be tangible. Do atheist's day dream?
Depends on the atheist.
So do you

Do you believe that we are selected by God before birth and in That case perhaps that's what has happened to non believers, they were not selected?
Paging Mr Calvin.

What if Jesus is not God? What is one of the many other religions is right?

It not not Jesus vs atheism. It’s Jesus vs all the other gods. And atheism.
I wonder about people who have been raised since they were children being told that their particular religion was right. Muslims and Hindus and all other religions that these people have been taught since they first learned how to speak. I can only trust that God has the answer.

Dunno why you say that. Enki is one of the many gods who is not Jesus. Beside, Saint Pope JP 2nd said God and Allah are the same god so it’s an obvious trick question that I’m not falling for.
The Pope can say what he wants but I don’t worship Allah

Please think about your answer carefully before replying:
  • How many people were first-hand witnesses of the resurrection and provided a written first-hand account in the Bible?
  • How many people heard about the resurrection second-hand and later wrote about it in the Bible?
  • How many people heard there were many witnesses to the resurrection and mentioned this in their biblical writings (ie. a report of a report)
We won't even go into the tendency for humans to manufacture (with the best intentions) fantastical stories to bolster their beliefs or promote retrospective prophecy fulfilment. We will also ignore the possibility that many of those who wrote the Bible were not actually contemporaneous with Jesus and wrote about Jesus based on second or third-hand hearsay from devoted (therefore biased) followers years, or even decades, after the fact.

I could ask a series of similar questions about various miraculous events.

The “it’s true whether you believe it or not” line is nonsense. I need evidence.
Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

I know you are sincere about what you've written here. The problem is, looking through the eyes of a non-believer, it comes across as a rather trite platitude.

While not all non-believers are the same, there is a general tendency amongst us to value evidence over blind faith.

This means that statements like this are relatively meaningless to an atheist.

Then see what we do with it.

Would you call these products of "rather trite platitudes"?

The Bible
Time divided into BC and AD.
Organizations such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army.
Hospitals built by Christian organizations.
Beautiful Christian artwork, edifices, statuary and literature.
IN GOD WE TRUST on our coins and UNDER GOD in our pledge of allegiance.
The Ten Commandments and other literature displayed in public.
Christmas & Easter
Symbols on bumper stickers and flags.
Public debates in the name of Christianity.
Crosses and billboards erected to testify of Jesus Christ.
Two major nations founded on His existence.

Putting Christianity aside, how about what Shoko Asahara did in 1996 (?) with Sarin nerve gas, as a response to his god Shakti, the god of destruction?

Faith is very powerful, and shouldn't be taken lightly; and I have to wonder why academia prefers Mark Twain's definition to that of the Bible.

Twain says faith is believing something you know ain't so.

Yes, I'm kinda surprised they're throwing verse's at you, you a non believer i am sure are familiar with most. It hasn't changed all these years knowing them. It would have to be something that would strike you a new.

Is that what Jesus did?

"Threw verses" at the scribes and Pharisees, who knew those verses inside and out?
