  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Proof???!!!!!

It's kinda weird that most Christian and Muslims on these boards never say..... "I was a Christian because my parents/friends/family were Christians/Muslims".

Most say they found god on their own.

Amazingly, in Christian countries, they find Christ and in Muslim countries they find Muhammed (there are exceptions).

If they all did an honest open search, you would expect different results.

Don't think you're exempt from this --- just because you're an atheist.

The Bible exposes your atheism as a form of worship.

The bible exposes nothing. That’s not to say the bible as not got its uses. It’s an excellent example of how stone age man seen the world around him. At that time it was completely full of superstition, of course superstition is still around to the point where it rules individual and sometimes collective lives, but its grip is lessening all the time.

Ya --- that's what your religion teaches --- doesn't it?

The farther back in time you go, the more superstitious people were.

Not in my case, I have studied many faiths. I even spent three months in Japan studying what it means to be a buddhist.

I did not accept Christianity because it was familiar to me. I accepted it because I believe it to be true.

I can't remember where this verse is in the Bible, but it is in there.

"The circle of the Earth hangs in nothing"

Quite advanced for a stone age man.

Not really, the earth is not round but a sphere, and where it may be considered to be in a vacuum, it most certainly does not hang from anything.

To a point; if you go back far enough, lets say before Homo sapiens developed complex speech, it is highly unlikely to have been no superstition. It’s just a way of explaining the universe to people who had little understanding of it, outside what constituted survival.

No, I can't agree with that. Being antheist is a belief that God does not exist.

We are not born with beliefs.

I'm not sure what an antheist is, but an atheist is someone who does not believe in God. They could believe that God does not exist, but they don't have to.

"Atheist" is derived from the greek prefix a- meaning "without" and suffix θεος meaning "god" i.e. "without god."

Not in any way that makes sense using correct definitions of atheism and of worship.

Go on, AV, show I'm wrong, give me definitions of both words, which match up to modern usage, and show the one includes the other. I don't care about the Bible here, because it has nothing to do with the Bible, only with definitions.

To a stone age man, the earth would appear flat.

I have written this or something like it at least 10 times.

There is not a single Christian or creationists on this forum that was or will admit to being indoctrinated,
EVERY one of them, EVERY LAST ONE, found their God by their own efforts,
most of them would have us believe they did not know there was a God until they were in their teens,
and half of them had Atheists for parents,
and most claim to have read about other religions before they decided to go with Christianity,
and they ALL went with Christianity because, IT MADE SENSE,
the reason why the belief in creationism: Evolution could not be proved, but creationism could.

No, you are wrong. There is one logically indefensible variant of atheism called "Strong Atheism" that believes God does not exist.

This is a universal negative and cannot be defended.

Atheism, in it's more logically defensible position, of weak atheism says there is so far no reason to believe God exists, but does not make a universal negative statement.

This is an important subtlety and one that we atheists on the board seem to have to bring up over and over again.

That's because most Christians don't bother to try to understand atheism to the same level as the atheists have spent trying to understand Christianity.

Since many of us were former Christians or religious people ourselves, we have taken the time to become familiar with religious thought.

You may wish to do so as well. There are a number of resources available to you on the internet.

We are not born with beliefs.

But we are born with the tendency to try to draw connections as "explanatory and predictive tools", so we are prone to develop superstitions and religion as a means of explaining that which we don't understand.

We are born atheist in that no evidence is ever provided that would prove the existence of God, let alone one god over another, and hence we end up with one planet full of a wide variety of often mutually-exclusive "Absolute Truths".

You cannot be born an atheist... as it is a belief.

Drawing tendancies after birth was not the question.

Did you NOT read what I wrote? How rude!

Drawing tendancies after birth was not the question.

Considering you didn't bother to read what was written I don't think it much matters. I addressed the point of how we come to belief.

Sorry, but if you are going to debate people, do us the favor of actually bothering to read what we have written.

Gary, nice to meet you, my brother; but I respectfully disagree --- on a technicality.

I find it hard to believe anyone in the past would believe the earth is flat (although some did).

Why is it no one ever complained that they would fall off the earth going north and south?

I can see, if they just looked east and west, over the ocean, but to think that you'll fall off the earth because it's flat, then plan a trip more than 30 miles north, is hypocritical.

Basically, all one would have to do is walk 30 miles in each direction, and he would know that the earth is not flat.

This flat earth stuff is junk science --- not junk theology.

I have read what you have written... How does that change a fact... You believe God does not exist... You was not born with that belief... Hence you can not be born a atheist.

It was you who added another topic... post birth tendancies... Not I.

You got a problem with strong atheism, take it outside, punk. :)

Not only is it not "logically indefensible", it's relatively easy to defend. I would contend that were it not for the cultural respect that we give religious ideas no matter how nutty, most atheists would call themselves strong atheists since most genuinely are strong atheists.

For a start, you can drop this "universal negative" stuff. 100% certainty is yet another carry-over from the theists and it isn't something that anyone applies to any other area, but they toss it in to confuse you into thinking that if you can't be 100% absolutely, positively certain, then you have no right to reject their kooky ideas. That's nonsense and we don't apply that to any other position.

This is an important subtlety and one that we atheists on the board seem to have to bring up over and over again.
I know, but why bother? Do you really have no opinion on the issue at all beyond a mere lack of belief? I have a hard time accepting that.

Give me a break --- in the length of time I've been here, I have only once or twice seen a light bulb come on in an atheist's head concerning the tenets of Christianity.
