Me too .... I can just make one as long as I want it! But I suspect that those nice, even knots that I like, that don't distract me, are not something that a beginner would produce.

Yes! You need practice to learn tie a prayer rope!! It is matter of practice & God's help!! Pray to learn it!!

because that kind of prayer should be done with spiritual direction. it's very easy for the demons to mess with us when praying the prayer rope if we are not handed a rule by a priest.

Is this customary to all kinds of Orthodox devotions or does this count exclusively for the prayer rope?

I've been using a Prayer Rope for over a year (even as a Lutheran) and have never experienced anything but peace, grace, and mercy by doing so.
