Nigeria: 5,000 Boko Haram prisoners released

The Nigerian army has freed 5,000 Boko Haram prisoners, according to a statement released by Colonel Sani Usman, Acting Director of PR for the Nigerian Army.

Boko Haram frequently targets Christian communities in northern Nigeria, and it is likely that many of those released have been persecuted and held because of their faith. Open Doors is working to provide trauma care and other emergency aid to support victims of persecution in Nigeria.

Many of the villages these people have come from have been overrun by Boko Haram. They are now no more than empty shells with no infrastructure and in many cases no clean water supply. To return and rebuild these shattered communities will be incredibly difficult.

I wasn't sure where to put this link, it is so astounding! A vicar in Stoke is welcoming and bringing refugees into a faith in Jesus;
'In just three years, the Rev Sally Smith has presided over this total transformation of St Mark’s from a middle-class church to something resembling a refugee processing centre.


It is far from an isolated case. In fact, Smith’s story is a microcosm of what is happening across churches in Europe where a growing number of Muslim refugees are converting to Christianity'.

We pray that You will strengthen them in the midst of their trials, that they will honor Your name, and that You will keep them safe so that the seed of Your gospel can continue being sowed on Earth. May Your Holy Spirit give them peace, and may all their accusers be turned away by the power of your holy hand. Grant peace, oh Blessed Lord, to all those who call upon Your name, and may the light of your salvation in Jesus shine upon them. In His precious name, amen.

...A rise in hardline Hindu nationalism in India has seen churches and pastors attacked with impunity.

Open Doors records show that worldwide there were over 7,000 Christians killed for faith-related reasons in the year – almost 3,000 more than the previous year. (These are conservative estimates and exclude North Korea, Syria and Iraq, where accurate records do not exist.) Around 2,400 churches were attacked or damaged – over double the number for last year. In terms of violence against Christians and Christian property, Nigeria and Central African Republic top the list.

And the world has watched aghast as millions of refugees risk the hazardous route to Europe from the Middle East and the Horn of Africa. Their number includes tens of thousands of Christians fleeing war and persecution.

There are Christians in this world who are suffering horrific persecution for their faith in Jesus Christ. These persecuted Christians would rather face death than renounce Christ as their Savior and Lord. Would you please pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering for His name? And one last question: Would you renounce Christ if you were faced with severe persecution or even death because of your faith in Him?

Lord, I pray that you would impart your supernatural strength and bring comfort to your precious Saints who are being persecuted throughout the world; may you reveal yourself to them as you did to Stephen (Acts 7:55 But Stephen was filled with the Holy Spirit. He looked toward heaven, where he saw our glorious God and Jesus standing at his right side.[a] 56 Then Stephen said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right side of God!”). Amen!

Christians imprisoned in solitary confinement
The families of three Azerbaijani Christians detained for more than a month in Iran have appealed for help.

Bahram Nasibov, 37 (pictured left), Yusif Farhadov, 51 (centre), and Eldar Gurbanov, 48 (right), were arrested on 24 June at an engagement party in Tehran. They were then taken to an unknown location in the city to be interrogated and have since been held in solitary confinement - only able to contact their families once or twice.

Middle East Concern (MEC) reports that the men have not been allowed access to a lawyer, nor have they been allowed contact from their Embassy.

The families of the men are asking us to pray and write to the Iranian authorities to appeal for the safe return of their husbands and fathers - our brothers in Christ. Please pray using the prayer points below and email the Iranian authorities to appeal for their immediate release.

Please Pray:

• That Bahram, Yusif and Eldar would be freed soon
• That the Lord would comfort and provide for the imprisoned men's wives and children
• That God would move the Iranian authorities to act justly and love mercy.
