In the olden days, it would take me a whole day to get to Paris and whether you travelled by road or by rail, part of the travelling would involve crossing the sea from England to France by ferry or catmaran. It involved a lot of travelling and a lot of waiting: the usual motorway queues, as well as checking in and checking out at the ferry terminals. In 2015 I was so excited to make my first trip from London to Paris by Eurostar. Eurostar is a train service that takes you from London, through the channel tunnel into the heart of Paris, in around two hours. Of course, it had been around for many years but it was the first time I tried it!
The trains are smooth, luxurious and extremely fast, travelling up to speeds of 186mph (300km/h).
I love France, and particularly, I love Paris. One of the most rewarding aspects of Paris is exploring the city on foot. It is very tempting to use the Metro or RER to get from place to place quickly and conveniently, but exploring on foot gives you the opportunity to experience the city on another level. For instance, I was walking along a side street in the Quarter Latin and had a chat, in both English and French, with a nice chap who had recently opened a restaurant serving Indian cuisine. Within minutes, I was sat in that restaurant, and enjoyed an excellent four course dinner, including coffee, costing me less than 25 euros (about 30 dollars). I also explored many of the back streets where I encountered bars where you could buy the same quality cup of coffee at a fraction of the price of those in the main tourist areas. You also got chance to speak to some of the locals too!
