  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Which is immaterial to the discussion here. If I'm living in your head or something that's something you have to deal with.

That's a very complimentary opinion you have of yourself...and of the fact that you backpedaled.

Its more of a Muslim background than any "white" candidate I know of.

Horse crap. That's not even a Muslim background at all. That's the equivalent of guilt by association. "Some people in his family are Muslim" so the odds are more likely that he is one too. I say the odds of that are pretty terrible and you accuse me of saying the odds are bad "just cuz."

As opposed to saying the odds are much higher "just cuz."

No, I was saying it would be more likely (likely at all rather) that Obama would be suspected of being a Muslim for having Islam in his background. I wasn't saying in this discussion that Obama is or isn't a Muslim.

You claimed it in a previous thread and insinuated it in this one.

You're really struggling with this aren't you?

Not really.

Then go to that thread and challenge it.

I did challenge it in that thread. I asked you the same question, and you said that it was taquiya. That more or less means "regardless of all the evidence that Obama is NOT a Muslim, I'm going to continue to think he's one anyways."

And there's no point in necroing an old thread.

In this thread, starting on page 54, I responded to your assertion that it was Obama's race alone that would lead people to accuse him of being a Muslim. I responded to that. That. That. Why is this so hard for you?

And your response/counter was garbage, which we have already established. We've been establishing your lack of any evidence that he's a Muslim for the past few pages. We've established the fact that you've backpedaled for the past few pages. Why is this so difficult?

That's all good, but you initially claimed that Obama's race alone led to accusations of being a Muslim. Whatever I think or don't think of Obama is immaterial to this discussion. You made a claim about race and politics. You said that black Obama is accused of being a Muslim because he's black, and that a white candidate wouldn't have that accusation thrown at him. My point, my whole point was that there would be no accusation of Obama being a Muslim if he didn't have some Islam in his background. It wouldn't have even come up because no one would think of it!

Again, his "Muslim" background consisted of not being raised Muslim.

Yes we can agree on that.

Yes I can agree that you aren't very good at this. If I ever need a lesson on how to backpedal by saying "it was in a different thread" I will come talk to you. Guaranteed.

I have backpedaled on nothing here.

Horse crap. That's not even a Muslim background at all. That's the equivalent of guilt by association. "Some people in his family are Muslim" so the odds are more likely that he is one too. I say the odds of that are pretty terrible and you accuse me of saying the odds are bad "just cuz."

Immaterial. You initially said that people accused Obama of being a Muslim because of his race. Later you added "ignorance". But my initial response was to your assertion that it was just race that led to the accusation. Whether or not people are justified in believing Obama was/is a Muslim is immaterial.

You claimed it in a previous thread and insinuated it in this one.

What I claimed in a previous thread is immaterial. I was responding to your insinuation on page 54 post 1078 that the accusation by some that Obama was a Muslim was based on his race alone.

Not really.

Yeah, really.

I did challenge it in that thread. I asked you the same question, and you said that it was taquiya. That more or less means "regardless of all the evidence that Obama is NOT a Muslim, I'm going to continue to think he's one anyways."

All of which is immaterial because this entire conversation here is based on your assertion that Obama was accused of being a Muslim because of his race alone. You asserted this on page 54 post 1078.

And your response/counter was garbage, which we have already established. We've been establishing your lack of any evidence that he's a Muslim for the past few pages. We've established the fact that you've backpedaled for the past few pages. Why is this so difficult?

I'm not asserting he's a Muslim in this discussion. I'm challenging your assertion that people would think he's a Muslim based on his race alone, an assertion you made on page 54 post 1078.

Again, his "Muslim" background consisted of not being raised Muslim.

Immaterial. There is enough in his background for people to at least notice "Islam" is associated with Obama. Whether rightly or wrongly people assume that he is a Muslim is immaterial here. I was challenging your assertion that people would think he's a Muslim based on his race alone, an assertion you made on page 54 post 1078. I'm not debating here whether or not Obama is a Muslim. I'm not debating whether or not people are justified in assuming he is. I'm challenging your assertion that people would think he's a Muslim based on his race alone, an assertion you made on page 54 post 1078.

Yes I can agree that you aren't very good at this. If I ever need a lesson on how to backpedal by saying "it was in a different thread" I will come talk to you. Guaranteed.

If you define backpedaling as sticking to the discussion here, where you asserted on page 54 that Obama was accused of being a Muslim based on his race alone, then yeah, I guess.

Right. I wasn't the one accusing someone else of backpeddling. The term was misapplied to me, thanks for pointing this out.
I pointed out where somebody said you backpeddled, and your response was to say you stayed on topic.

You're welcome for me pointing out your inaccurate response.

My response was that if they defined backpedaling as staying on topic then yeah, I did. But only if they defined it that way.

glad to help.

Ironic that you sre now backpeddling again.

If you define backpedaling (one "d") here as referring to where I pointed out that my sticking to the topic of the discussion can be defined as "backpedaling", then yeah I guess I did.

There is no white privilege.

What do you call it then? Luck? How is it that whites own and run just about everything from the banks, to technology, to the media, to the government, without calling it a privilege to control all these areas. Is it a curse?

Start some banks. Start some technology companies. Start your own media outlets. Run for office.

This is how things work.

And how does an extremely small number of whites at the controls of industry translate to white privilege for every other person who shares the same socially designated race?

Do i, as a white person, have more influence in the media, industry practices or government than a black person with the same monetary resources as i have, simply by virtue of me being white? Just because i share an attribute of skin color (not really, as pigmentation varies widely even with socially designated groups), how does these other white people holding positions of power/authority project into privilege for me?

Be white, it helps. This is also how things work.

I don't feel guilty about it, maybe that's why it's so easy for me to see it for what it is and call it that.

Well I'll tell ya how it works for the group. Those high up people hire people that they feel "comfortable" with hiring. People that look and act like them. Those people do the same and so on down the line until you get to entry level positions. People at the bottom seepeoplethat look like them at the top and are moved up as long as they meet the requirements and make their higher ups feel "comfortable" giving them more responsibility.

Young people see people that look like them in charge of all aspects of life which prepares them for their role as the next in line to take charge. If not by birth right, going to a school in more affluent neighborhood or town with more money to spend on their public (or private if their lucky) school. With standardized testing results which are culturally biased pushing them ahead in college entrance exams. With parents that were more likely to have attended college and a clearer path to college, graduates will find that even Asians will be 25% less likely to find a job after college with the same degree and they will be paid less.

As for how it affects you personally, I can say a few anecdotal things for sure. You will be given the benefit of the doubt by the police. You will likely have an easier time finding a job and/or being promoted than your minority counterpart. You will be offered more desirable choices when looking for a home. You have less of a chance of being a victim of violence. One I thought was funny was you can be sure when you go to a hotel, the bath and body products will work with your hair and skin Over all, you can enjoy first class service wherever you go and not be treated like you are worth less as a person because of the color of your skin.

NBA team ownership is 23% white? That's news to me. I thought it was more like 90%
Great point. They sure don't seem to mind having black employees. I wonder if, in order to be successful, maybe they want to hire the best people for the job regardless of color, like any sensible businessman does?

So... back to nature vs nurture?
Traditional environs offer unequal opportunity.
Regardless of how we frame it, we should all get creative and enthused about solutions.

We'll see if they start allowing black employees in the front office
