  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

But, as I said it will be soon that no one will have privilege because of globalization. So, to me anyone who is actually prejudiced or especially racist are pitiful, and I feel bad for them. Reason: those people will be the first on the list to a hate and revile when the world becomes fully globalized. How do you think people would react when the playing field is evened, and the same people who had a history of imperialist, violent and racist against their people are suddenly equal (or even less than equal) in the world's eyes?

Yes, one would hope they have the patience and faith and love kindness of a saint...

Is this your way of expressing a fantasy that white people are going to get it and get it good? Also, your notion that there will be some kind of "even playing field" is fanciful. Laughable even.

It isn't racism to color bandaids the skin tone of most people. It's just economical. Don't worry, they should be shifting a few shades darker in the next few decades.
The most economical band-aid would be one that's transparent. I hope someone is working on that right now.

People acknowledge and consider white privilege as the "way it is," but get all bent out of shape as soon as you point out that it's white privilege. A perfect example of this would be name choice for children. Black parents must consider the names they give their children because of discrimination based on black-sounding names. White parents have no such issue, they have the privilege of not dealing with such a problem. Despite the overwhelming evidence that such inequalities exist in our society, people want to get all bent out of shape because they only consider it a privilege if they've been handed something explicitly.

The world is also right-handed privileged; at least our society creates products that a left-handed person can use. Nonetheless, it's an inequality that will remain.

As to Talib Kweli, is he saying the person is a racist in the sense of holding racist beliefs, or a racist in that they perpetuate a racist system?
Well for one thing, and I mean no disrespect I have had black friends with "black sounding names and have no issue, but the problem is that some black sounding names can be hard to pronounce. As for white people not having to "deal with it" the culture is such that it is not as if white people could not choose to name their child such a name it is that they do not. This is not privilwge it is simply that they choose to name kids things that people ( for the most part) know how to say, but any race can choose to name their kid or kids whatever they choose.

In which liberal whites think that calling other whites "racist" will shield them from being called racist themselves.

Goodness, when did white people become so all-powerful?
Not all people are racists and there are racists in every race.

It's not fair some people were born ugly and some were born beautiful. I called this "Beautiful privilege" Can we all agree beautiful privilege exist? Let make it simpler can we all agree life is not fair and stop pretend it will ever be or you will drive yourself nuts?
Thank you, my dad would say fair is for kunagarden ( meaning that life is not fair and you just have to deal with that and do YOUR part to be fair, but you cannot expect life to be fair or other people to be fair to and/or for you.

Are you blind? Because, that was an ignorant statement. You are choosing to ignore the countless programs, rhetoric and rallies that exclaim the white race is in danger. You even ignore the same people who claim they have to fight their own "extinction" or demotion to a minority.

I honestly would rather people would just understand instead of being flippant. That won't happen, which is why (for many people,) they will see globalization - one of many facets of global paradigm shift - as a reconing. To others, it will be seen as simple progress overdue.

And, your post is a perfect example of the paranoia that comes with seeing this change as threatening - especially your first and last sentence.

“Anger is a legitimate response to oppression,” the authors state in a section directed at white people, “as is sadness, fear, frustration, exhaustion, and a general distaste or hatred of white people.”- Unofficial Scripps College Survival Guide
Maybe, so to a certain point. Violence begets violence. Yes, it is OK to be angry, yes it is OK to asks questions, but it does no good to feed that by hating people or being violent. Plus, not all people ( white or otherwise are racist). I happen to be white I will treat everyone with the same respect unless and until you prove you do not deserve it white, black, whatever race I will not respect you if you do certain actions no matter your race.

If you mean visually challenged, then no.

Its not that I ignore them, its that until your post here I wasn't even aware of these "countless programs, rhetoric and rallies". Where does all this happen? Facebook? Youtube?

I honestly would rather people would just understand instead of being flippant. That won't happen, which is why (for many people,) they will see globalization - one of many facets of global paradigm shift - as a reconing. To others, it will be seen as simple progress overdue.

Up until your post every time I heard of "globalism" it had a very negative connotation. Now you tell me it will be payback time for us terrible whites. An interesting spin.

And, your post is a perfect example of the paranoia that comes with seeing this change as threatening - especially your first and last sentence.

Right. My post was paranoid.

They don't call blue band-aids flesh color, that's the point. Discussions of privilege is not attempting to claim there are not significantly more egregious levels of racism. The world is right-hand privileged, there are many things I come across where I recognize the item or facility was designed for a right-handed person. When I go to the store for an item that requires handedness, I sometimes have to specially order it; those that do not have a privilege that left-handed people are not afforded. You don't have to be murdered by the police to talk about these inequalities. Inequality measures inequality, the magnitude does not have to be large for there to be an inequality.
How are you comparing race to people's hands? I asks because the fact is that most people are right-handed has NOTHING to do with privilege. It has to do with since MOST people need things for their right hand then of course that is what people are going to sell. Like literally WELL over half the world's population is right handed, so why would they make and try to sell much left-handed things?

I don't believe the point of the band aid thing is that it's racist, but that it displays privilege. White people get to have flesh colored band aids that actually reflect the color of their flesh (generally speaking). Not everyone gets that, it's a privilege. Just like if everyone gets a tshirt, but you get a special one that has your name on it. It's a privilege, something not everyone gets.

Its just like when we study history: we get to see the accomplishments of white christian men, and we study how white christian men shaped history. Then, if we have time for an elective, we can also study women's history or black history. The official, standard, default version of history being the history of your people, that's a privilege: not everyone gets that.

-- A2SG, it's something so pervasive and obvious, you literally can't see it unless you're the one not getting the privilege....
They are band-aids what should they do sell band-aids to match skin tone? That is not the purpose of a band-aid it is not face- make up.

I know, right? I'm left handed and have never found difficulty with it.

I think the band-aid issue is just a concrete example of white privilege looks like. It manifests itself in many ways from like it said, hair products at the hotel to the way we are taught history in elementary school to who gets a call back for a job interview.

I think she makes it clear as a bell that white privilege exists I mean even so a child could understand it.
Honest question. What is so white privilege about teaching about white people in school? that was the color (for the most part of the people that came to the "new world" so it would stand to reason that they would be talked about in history.

A lot of whites have gotten skin cancer from trying to have a darker skin tone by tanning.

Why would they do that if a white skin tone has more privilege nowadays?

...seriously?

I can tell the difference between a tan white person, and a very fair black person - and so can police.

And, tanner skin shows more muscle fibers against the sunlight. Many beachgoers, bodybuilders and people who want to show off their muscles/body get tanned. Nothing to do with gaining or losing privilege, or becoming so tan that if you wear a hoodie a cop would stop you and beat you while telling you that stop resisting, for example of course..

How does white privilege explain how the United States has had a black man elected to lead it not just one time but twice?

Who said it did?

And, if you think the president runs the country that is another thread. The Senate is overwhelmingly white. The supreme courts are, including the US supreme court. Obama's chief of staff is also.

There are 216,000,000 white people in the US, 37,000,000 Black people, 47,000,000 Latino non white people, and around 20,000,000 Asian people. Out of those populations, an average of 50% are eligible to vote. That means 108,000,000 white people, 18,500,000 black people, 23,500,000 Latino, and 10,000,000 asian. The combined population of eligible minority voters is less than half the total eligible population of whites.

So, stop the junk insinuations about how Obama got elected, and that it was Black people who did it. This is especially true if you believe the inflated "statistics" that black and Latino people don't really vote.
