Within the next four years, NVIDIA plans to produce up to half a trillion dollars of AI infrastructure in the United States through partnerships with TSMC, Foxconn, Wistron, Amkor and SPIL. These world-leading companies are deepening their partnership with NVIDIA, growing their businesses while expanding their global footprint and hardening supply chain resilience.

Thank you President Trump for causing America to be self-sufficient in key industries.

"""The company will utilize its advanced AI, robotics and digital twin technologies to design and operate the facilities, including NVIDIA Omniverse to create digital twins of factories and NVIDIA Isaac GR00T to build robots to automate manufacturing."""

Robots in, American workers out.

They won't be very self-sufficient if China, which has 90% of the rare mineral reserves needed to manufacture technology and weaponry, decides not to sell it to us. (They have already taken steps to do so--see my recent post.)

It would be like trying to make an omelet without eggs.

No amount of money will make China part with these minerals, because what they want is an end to the U.S. attempting to make the rest of the world bow and scrape and beg.

Construction on this plant started in 2021:

pilot production began last year and full production was already slated to start this year:

Trump had nothing to do with this.

First, the "news" in the article is actually kind of hidden:

NVidia to begin building "supercomputers".

NVidia is a chip and tool company. They have not been a player in supercomputer building. (Running "AI" on a bunch of GPUs doesn't make a supercomputer.)

The chip plants are already in the US and are not new.

Supercomputers are *ALREADY* built in the US. Cray has built supercomputers in Wisconsin for decades. IBM builds them in NY state, and Dell in Texas.

You just destroyed my illusion of my quad core 2012 computer being state of the art.

The U.S. has a large mine in California, that should be sufficient.

Considering how much we have to import from other countries, you base this claim on what?

90% of the world's rare earth minerals are in China (and I'm sure they are mined at a fraction of the price.)
The world is coming after America for our ill-advised choice last November, and I fully understand why.

Mountain Pass will definitely help offset the need for purchasing rare-earth elements from abroad, especially since they are also working on setting up processing and refining facilities (both of which are largely done outside the US still, even for domestically-mined material), but it currently represents only about 15% of the world's rare-earth element output and does not produce all rare-earth elements required for modern electronics. It does not have the output to meet demand for current US manufacturing, let alone if we were to fully onshore semiconductor production.

Plans are nice. Reality may differ.

It is possible that this production will be expensive and kinda average and then some Chinese startup will come and build a better thing for 1/10 of the price.

Nobody knows if these plans will be successful or not. Whether the US will even find enough of experts or of high skilled immigrants willing to work in these factories.

Companies buy at the best price, it is hard to beat the price of slave labor.
That doesn't help your "The U.S. has a large mine in California, that should be sufficient" claim.

That's okay though.

I know, I got it on sale at Costco. It's 2009 technology. I got it because windows 7 was the OS.
I've never used windows, so I don't know which ones are which at least since they stopped naming them after years. I can guess when "Windows 95" was current.
