There are 4 main players that i see in the next gen engine area, computer only.

id Tech 5:

Little is know about it but it look great, in my opinion it looks to be the best. I hope it has a great physics system and developer tools to back it up. It also used openGL :D . (sorry for the low quality video)

Cry Engine 2

so far this looks to be the most realistic in terms of looks. It has an good distructable enviroment and nice physic engine. It also has many other great features which can be found here (only game developers will truly know what this means. http://www.crytek.com/technology/index.php?sx=eng2

Here is a video of the engine in action:

Unreal 3 engine:
What can i say, it looks great. Not as realistic as cryengine but great for for indoor fps's. Great tools and specs, they can be found here: http://www.unrealtechnology.com/html/technology/ue30.shtml

Havok, all tools:
It has been used to make everything from psp games to then best next gen games. With great support and tools it is easy for developers to work with. they are also inovating many things.

Only 1, havok, of these engines is currently out. All of them are being used to make great next gen games. We wil have to wait to see which one produces the best looking and most fun content. (i still believe in id tech 5)

Cryengine 2 is definitely the best and most amazing one, but Unreal Engine 3 is also mindblowing considering it's based on DX9 technology!

It just looks the best. Unreal 3 has the best features in lighting, modles, animations, textures, physics, sound, and scripting. I still think ID teck 5 will be the best considering how great doom 3 looked and still looks when it was realeased back in 2004. Since we know little about the features, we can only guess at what it will include.

This was doom 3 in 2004:

Unreal Engine 3's lighting and whatnot is much more overblown and exaggerated than CryEngine 2, it doesn't make it better however. It looks cooler but I prefer the photorealism of CryEngine 2.

But we won't really be able to compare until the games are actually released. The demos from Unreal and Cry were early ones.

The id engine had the most impressive facial modeling/animation from what I could see, but the rest of it just looked more or less like Unreal.

Havok and Unreal have been used in games already out. Unreal 3's best success, so far, has been Gears of War. Ubisoft, EA, Square Enix, among others, have the license to use Unreal in any/all of their next gen titles. Havok is a physics engine with 3d mapping built on top of it. But I did notice you put Havok + tools.

Overall, I think Unreal Engine 3, and specifically, Unreal Tournament 3 will be better than Crysis due to the "uncanny valley" issue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_Valley).

Crysis just tries to replicate real environments, however, Unreal Tournament makes everything "hyper-realistic" so it's more fun and relaxed, and a better experience overall.
