Neo-Nazi leader and Maryland woman allegedly plotted to ‘completely destroy’ Baltimore, Justice Department says

Two people charged with conspiracy to damage energy facilities – a neo-Nazi leader and a woman with whom he had a personal relationship – allegedly planned to attack electrical substations encircling Baltimore and “completely destroy” the entire city, according to federal court documents.

The Justice Department has charged Brandon Clint Russell and Sarah Beth Clendaniel with conspiracy to damage energy facilities, alleging that the Maryland-focused plot was driven by ethnically or racially motivated extremist beliefs.

Before allegedly conspiring to attack the Maryland power grid, authorities say he had plotted with his roommates in Florida to attack energy facilities there. That alleged plot was revealed during an investigation into the 2017 murder of two of Russell’s roommates by another roommate. [golf-clap]

I guess he missed the nuances of prison life. Perhaps he should get more than 5 years.

Why Baltimore? Sure, it's old and has some not very attractive neighborhoods. But the crab cakes are the best in the world.

How about Bakersfield, CA.? Dreary, ugly, polluted, and one of the highest crimes rates in the country.

If you’re a neonazi who hates black people, Baltimore is a target rich environment.

So is he one of the good people on the neo Nazi side that Mr Trump was referring to, or one of the bad people on the neo Nazis side?

You are correct. I looked up some census data. The population of Baltimore city is about 60% black, 29% white, and 1% other. Sabotaging the power grid will hurt a fair number of white people, too. And I'd assume the damage wlll also affect Baltimore County. Which is 60% white.

What do these neo-Nazi bottom feeders think they'll accomplish?

The "race war", so I gather.

I think a lot of right wing extremists are wrapped up in absurd change-times prophesy with respect to their proposed global race-conspiracy.

Not sure. They obviously failed to account for the fact that we in Baltimore City are well accustomed to our utilities being broken garbage.

If they're an example of the master race, then Homo sapiens is better off going extinct.

Theres some medium-cunning extremist RW leadership, I think. Half starry eyed and half self-serving.

But the foot soldier corps seems pretty dim.

According to Trump he would be a bad person. Or have you forgotten what he said about supremacists?

Brandon Russell, 27, and Sarah Clendaniel, 34, face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

In messages revealed in court filings, Ms Clendaniel described their alleged plot as "legendary" and hoped it "would completely destroy the whole city".

Mr Russell is the founder of Atomwaffen Division, a neo-Nazi group that has been linked to murders, bombings and plots in the United States and other countries.

Attacks against infrastructure are a long-standing obsession of far-right and white nationalist groups, and they are increasingly being discussed in extremist spaces online.

Bennett Clifford, of the Program on Extremism at George Washington University, co-wrote a paper last year that analysed jihadist and white nationalist attacks, and concluded that since 2016, "white supremacist plots targeting energy systems dramatically increased in frequency".
The report tallied 11 cases of white nationalists arrested and charged in federal court with planning attacks on the energy sector after 2020.

How the US power grid is a target for far-right groups
