As I said, if AV wishes to abstain from alcohol, good for him.
If AV needs to order his god to abstain from alcohol, pity Him.

but to abstain 100% from alcohol isn't easy. So many foods, medicines, cooking methods (PAM spray anyone ? ) have varying amounts of alcohol in it, and will leave trace amounts even after cooking. Even Vinegar will contain alcohol, heck you can't even make Vinegar without alcohol.

Very true. It's why when some people take the drug Disulfram they can't have anything with any level of alcohol in it (including gargling mouthwash) because it will make them vomit.

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with drinking. I've drank alcohol plenty of times and have never been drunk. How do I do it? Moderation for the win.

Is smoking a sin?

There's nothing in Scripture which says smoking is sinful.

taking crystal meth?

Illegal, thus a violation of civil law.

"For the Lord's sake accept the authority of every human institution, whether of the emperor as supreme, or of governors, as sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right. For it is by God's will that by doing right you should silence the ignorance of the foolish. As servants of God, live as free people, yet do not use your freedom as a pretext for evil. Honor everyone. Love the family of believers. Fear God. Honor the emperor." - 1 Peter 2:13-17

"Do not murder" - Exodus 20:13

stealing?

"Do not steal" - Exodus 20:15

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with drinking.
Using John 2 to justify recreational drinking is like using a hospital to justify taking drugs.

Why because you don't want to drink alcohol you want to prevent anyone from having any?
Is that how Prohibition got started in the first place?

Drinking is a sin.

Luke 7:34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!

Ecclesiastes 9:7 Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.

1 Timothy 3:8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

The Bible Seems to encourage moderate drinking actually

Proverbs 31:6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.

Ya ... and we're all 'ready to perish' ... aren't we?

Bartenders & mixologists sure know their Bible, don't they? ;)

"Don't get drunk" means "drink moderately"?

I guess I'm a sinner then, aren't I?

Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

If someone can drink moderately, there's no reason they shouldn't. There are bigger things to think about. As we say in Ireland: You'll hardly see the forest if you mind the tree.

I'd reckon some are better exegetes than present company. That's a fairly low bar to overcome however.

I believe they had been drinking alcoholic wine and ran out.

When Jesus created non-alcoholic wine, they were perplexed, thinking they were drinking alcoholic wine.

Either that, or man-made grape juice cannot compete with God-made grape juice.

As some like to say: God doesn't make junk.

I just think the default position on the word "wine" in the Bible is of the non-alcoholic variety, unless the context shows otherwise.
According to the article you posted, there was no such thing as non-alcoholic wine until the 1800s.

But with "wine" that's different ... right?

With "wine," you suddenly become a Bible literalist?
That's because there is no reference in the Bible to non-alcoholic wine.

BTW, just because you claim some wine in the Bible is non-alcoholic does not make it so.

If AV can get away with saying that wine in the Bible means grape juice, I can get away with saying Genesis is an allegory and "from the dust of the ground" hints at God-assisted abiogenesis.
But, but, but, that's not what the Bible says.

[/sarcasm]

Better yet, I could pack it in snow, place it underground, submerge it in water, or drink it right away.

In your opinion, how did they preserve milk?
By turning it into cheese and clarified butter.
