I'd like to examine this concern of yours about becoming "equal" to God, if you don't mind. My primary concern about this is find out why this seems to be so important a theme in your understanding of salvation, and also to ascertain the nature your understanding of what it is to be equal to God.
Through the Bible we learn that Jesus the Son of God and our brother thought it not robbery to be equal to God:
(New Testament | Philippians 2:5 - 6)
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
Paul was looking forward to the prize of the high calling of God:
(New Testament | Philippians 3:13 - 15)
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.
Jesus said that men are Gods:
(New Testament | John 10:34)
34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
We have a divine nature:
(New Testament | 2 Peter 1:4)
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
And there is this also:
(New Testament | Ephesians 3:19)
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
(New Testament | Ephesians 4:13)
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
