Yeah the lack of horizon is a nightmare here. All I can see is buildings and more buildings. The mountains are too short and when you get to the top you realize that you're surrounded by buildings.

I have a Phillipine friend who thought Mt. Fuji was super beautiful until I filled her in on the Mission Mountains and she was simply speachless at their beauty.

You're in Tokyo? I know from pictures and reading how that city has spread and consumed so much area and that other Japanese cities are like that, too: Kyoto, Kobe/Osaka etc.

Fuji-san is beautiful as a stand alone and all, but that's nice that she can appreciate the Missions. There are alot of fine mountains in Montana. The Highwoods SE of Great Falls, the Snowies and the Crazies, the way the Front rises out of the plains west of Choteau, the Cabinet and Swan ranges.. I'm making myself homesick!

Actually I'm north of Nagoya in her suburbs. I take a train two hours to get to my church and all I see the entire way is houses and buildings. My area, Gifu, has some itty bitty mountains (I'd call them hills but they're too steep) but hiking up them and seeing only buildings makes it depressing

I've seen lots of pictures of how things are built up in Japan. People move to the cities and from things I've read, will just leave perfectly nice places in the country, abandoning them. (for example in Alex Kerr's "Lost Japan" he finds the house in the Iya Valley on Shikoku).

Are you in Japan permanently or for work or do you hope to return to Montana someday?

I'm working here now but I'll definetely be back. I'm hoping to visit for a month next year but that's still on the rocks. Most likely I'll live here for at least a few more years and try to save money for a return back. There's no way I could live in Gifu the rest of my life. It's like having cabin fever and not being able to escape the cabin.

Just for a laugh, I thought I'd pass on some humor about weather differences in Japan.

Starting late September, the long sleeves came out even though it was in the upper 60s. By the upper fifties, full jackets and sweaters could be seen. The were staring at me until last week when I finally broke out my fall jacket to wear in the morning and at night.

Now Montana's high is lower than Gifu's low (about 48 here). Three or four layers can be seen on many people around here during the hottest part of the day while I've had to shed my jacket for a light long sleeve.

I filled my A and B tags on Veterans Day. I still have an elk tag to fill but I'm not sure I'll make it out to the woods again this season.

Cool! I can't seem to even get my A tag filled. Haven't seen anything bigger than a 2 point. Those wiley whitetail! lol! Seriously, though. Cool for you!

At least the mountains have been getting some snow, from what I heard. I know Kings Hill had plenty during hunting season.

Wow, I just moved back to Montana for a bit too, close to the Missoula area as well. It hasn't changed TOO much.

It'll be four years but I'll be visiting Missoula next summer. I'm almost afraid of what has changed. Was really sad to find that my old HS principal passed away recently.
