Moderate Lutheran Churches

K let's keep it going. So moderate Lutheran churches hugely outnumber the more confessional ones by about 65million to 3million. Why does such a big gap exist, and more importantly why are the African Lutheran churches, which are way conservative, still joining the LWF. Do you think they know that there is the ILC, and that there are Lutheran Churches like the WELS and Missouri Synod?!?

I know that the Nigerians know about the LCMS at least. There are some strong missionary efforts going on in that country. There was a visit by one of the missionary directors to our church a few weeks ago. He did the sermon in a scarlet shirt. No jacket, robes, nothing. The pastor did the entire service in a suit as well. In fact, he's since done so several times. I have to look around sometimes to make sure I'm not in a Baptist church.

In Liberia there's a congregation that's been active since the seventies, that I know of. They've been wiped out twice by terrorists. Yet even with all the death and destruction, that congregation is still going strong, last I heard. And we think there's problems with the church HERE?

So, yes. I do believe that the Africans are aware of the LCMS and also likely the WELS churches. However, judging by what I saw in the films a few weeks ago, the message they are getting about the Lutheran church is very confused.

I believe in order to join the ILC, altar/pulpit fellowship must first be declared. That takes a bit of doing.

Wow I didn't think the numbers where that big gap-wise, confessional churches would be like LCMS and WELS right?

Yes, along with some other, albeit smaller, groups as well.

I just wanted to encourage you in your search. I've also just come off a three-year search ordeal (and I do mean an ordeal!), and have landed joyfully (and somewhat surprisingly to me) in the LCMS.

I want to encourage you to persevere in your search. Pray feverently and often for God to lead you, and to preserve you from error. And believe that, in His own time (which is often much longer than ours!), He will do just that. And even though I know you know it, remember that there isn't a perfect church out there. There just isn't. But there are good churches, and if you can find one of those, you are blessed.

If you feel discouraged, keep pressing on - your journey won't last forever, though sometimes it may seem like it! If you stick with it, God is able to make you come out the other side better and stronger (and probably a bit humbled) by the whole maddening, frustrating, confusing, and even exhilarating process.
