  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Men can also do women's work. In high school I worked at Kroger's, where I learned how to operate the cash register (no scanners back then). I was so good that on busy Saturdays you could find me in the number one check lane doing my thing. More fun than stocking shelves, and I didn't have to carry out groceries.

I had a free hour in my senior year in hs (1958). I took a typing class. There was one other guy in the class, and he was gay. The instructor was the football coach. Go figger.
Not sure remotely what the other guy's sexual orientation or the instructor's incidental role otherwise has to do with anything. I was taught history by sports coaches in junior high, which might partly be the reason I didn't retain it that well, my school sucked at actually hiring capable people who cared

Not sure why a cash register is automatically "women's work" anymore than sewing or the like: men should know how to do that because it's common in application and universal in need, it's not gendered except by societal constructs about it

Back then stores hired women and girls as checkers, and men and boys to stock shelves and carry out groceries. However several of us guys learned how to check out. However the only stocking the girls did was the spice and candy shelves. They just weren't needed to do heavy lifting, and they needed to remain close to the front end.

Where I shop today has mainly women and girls checking out, but there are a few guys as well. Shelf stocking is done in the dead of night and I doubt if any women would be found doing that work.

I didn't claim women and men were physically identical and I can understand some reasonable distinctions, but you seem to suggest that women's role in doing cash register work is somehow the primary thing, when I'm pretty sure women could and are managers or higher level positions

You need PEOPLE at the front end, you don't need women exclusively unless that's all you have in that context, but I'd also not assume women wouldn't do shelf stocking within a weight limit or such, I know women who do factory work and such, it's not as if men are the only ones doing that either, because factories understand the capacity of any average human in terms of jobs that aren't requiring more muscle mass or such

Not sure I get it, but the more obscure the joke, the more likely the punchline won't land, probably

Of course women can, and do, many jobs traditionally done by men. I'm just relating how things were back in the day, and that no one had any issues with it. There was no sexism, misogyny, or discrimination that defined those job roles, only tradition. Today the deference's and courtesies afforded women in the past are pretty much gone.

Misogyny, sexism and discrimination can and has been rooted in tradition, mistaken as it was in hindsight (gender roles in particular).

The justification, as you point out, was that it was just how things were, but that's an irrational and uncritical look at how things ought to be

You think people still don't defer to a pregnant woman to give up their seat on a bench or the bus? You'd have to be more specific about what's disappeared that you think, seemingly, shouldn't have disappeared?

If so most were blissfully ignorant of it.

I made no forward projections based on the past.

Of course we retain common courtesies.

I'm not complaining about most changes as none affected me negatively. In fact I was a beneficiary of the sexual revolution of the 1960's, which occurred at the peak of my bachelor years. :D

Ignorance is not an excuse if someone is pointing out the problems now that can be changed in how we address them

Being asexual, I'm fine with you having gotten laid or whatever, but you seem to have a problem some changes, even if not most of them affected you negatively. Just curious what those are

Old wise guy , YOU were blissfully unaware of the problems misogyny caused . Women weren’t unaware which was why there was such a revolt during the 60s . I’m sure you remember woman’s lib . We were sick and tired of tolerating that irrational crap caused by “tradition”.

And it seems, and/or I've read, that women going that direction in or with a wrong spirit have made themselves un- or less desirable to Honorable Christian Men.

Oppression , deliberately kept ignorant and undereducated, not allowed control of our own bodies and told lies about it besides . that tradition we women didn’t need in the 60s and don’t need it now . Women aren’t tolerating the nonsense our female ancestors had to put up with that was mislabelled ladylike behavior. Like staying silently with an abuser instead of putting that trashy man in the trash can .

Just because someone 'points out' what they regard as a problem doesn't mean that I have to change anything.

Many of the so-called problems being cited are a natural result of human nature. Not much can be done to solve them. In fact they get worse in many cases. We need to study our nature more in order to find productive solutions. Unfortunately most don't want to reveal their true nature to others.

I'm not bothered much by these women's issues. I've remained single after my divorce years ago and am very content. I know what I know, and care little about what others conclude. I fulfill my social responsibilities and take comfort in that.

There is nothing sinful in women demanding to be treated as full members of the human race.
really ? I’ve seen sooo many Christian sects who will tell women that they can’t divorce or even leave a man who beats them . I’ve seen some sects that encourage men to over control women’s behavior to the point of emotional abuse or even sadism . They usually posit some nonsense about Eve’s sin justifying the mistreatment or over control. I’ve walked out of such churches and have never looked back.
