Conservative Christian authors are critical of movies and TV that have profanity. So that would include the misuse of the Lord's name. I am not a big movie buff or TV watcher, but I do enjoy sports broadcasts on TV or radio and the play by play man uses marginal terms like "Good Golly Miss Molly" and "Holy Smoke" throughout the game. Is this enough reason to push the "Mute" button? Personally it doesn't offend me, but I'm wondering if it should.

Well, and I mean no irreverence here, but if God's name is Molly, then be offended. Having a sports anchor say "Holy smoke!" is no worse than when Robin (in the old "Batman" TV series) used to say things like "Holy caper, batman!" Make sense?

I wouldn't worry about it. There are a lot more important issues to worry about than whether a commentator says 'golly' or whatever. It's not cursing or profaning God or anyone else for that matter, it's just a colloquialism or expression of surprise. If he was regularly coming out with the sort of words the language filter here blocks out, then I suppose you might have a point for consideration, but as it stands, I see no problem with it.

At the end of the day, though, its your call. If you don't think you should be listening to that sort of talk, then you probably shouldn't.

Frankly, it is my opinion that profanity is the least of our conscerns in a liberal media. I do not watch sports regularly, but I imagine that sports coverages and ESPN zone do not suffer nearly as much from the sort of scandal-bias the news media has.

The primary warning I have to people regarding the media is to strictly limit the amount of breaking news watched regularly, and if possible try to remain conscious of the possitive humanitarian reports far moreso than the scandal, atrocity, and general criminal activity which is glamourized on a daily basis. I would far rather have my generation swearing than to have them deceived, apathetic, and despondent about the world we live in, unable to see the beauty and integrity that the media systematically ignores.

With this said, I find it ludicrous for conservatives to be worrying about the nitpicky details of colloquialisms. Meanwhile, a generation of young people is being turned off to politics, morality, and any semblage of world culture that we have left in the pop-culture homogenized (globalized) stew in the melting pot that once was America.

Keep this in mind...if you worry yourself over things like this, then you will lose focus on other more important things that will be happening in your life. No one likes a worry wart, and no one gets along with someone that is constantly watching thier back looking to be sure they not are "exposed" to something anti-Christian etc.

What I mean is....you will walk life alone....and thats no way to live. No one can achieve ultimate Christianity. No one can NOT not sin. Doing the very best you can not to sin using your better judgement is accepted. Thats the whole reason for the new testament. Please don't worry yourself about it, you can't change the world only God can.

I wouldn't worry about it, i work in an environment everyday where people are addicted and you hear cussing all the time. I prefer to worry about myself and the way I talk and act towards others, not the other way around.

we're supposed to revere the Lord's name, and i really don't think we ought to shrug it off as nothing when people insult and demean it. as for swearing that doesn't slander religious terms or the name of God, i'm not a big fan of that. BUT i don't see how i could mute it when it comes up since there's no warning, and by the time i hear it and feel like muting, it's already been said... seems a bit impractical.

Hmmm, I have noticed a suspicious amount of that there fake meat stuff in my inbox of late. Yeah, it's only a trickle, but when you've been getting none, and suddenly you're getting one a day or so...hmmm...

I agree that we should be the most concerned about our own Christ-like behaviors. And I also feel that a nitpicking, even complaining attitude of some individuals towards the media is perhaps the wrong approach to the issue. I am a student of and work in the media so I am seeing it from the guts-on-out. And we need more Christians inside the mass media, not just ones to complain about the content (even though I agree- what's out there is not looking so hot these days).

If "Golly" worries you, then I wonder what the other issues you may face in day-to-day life make you think *hehe*. We can't mute the language other people use in real life whether we like it or not. So I think it's our response to that inside our hearts that makes the difference. When you hear the Lord's name in vain (in whatever way you view it), try praying at that moment, "Lord, I know you heard that. Hear our prayers as well." or something that refocuses your own mind onto the Only God.

But neither is horrific violence.

Media has no reason to care unless they see a drop in sales. Swearing, even the gosh hecky darn, puts people in seats... So does violence. And not to mention secks...
