A sculpture of Ronald McDonald nailed to a cross — a spoof of the crucifixion of Jesus — has sparked violent protests in Israel, with rioters hurling a firebomb at the museum.

'McJesus' exhibit featuring crucified Ronald McDonald sparks violent protests

The statements that art can express can be confronting and even offensive. The result can spark violence from religious groups. We've seen it with Moslems over cartoon depictions of Mohammed, and now firebombing from Christians in Israel.

Some museums deserve to be fire bombed.

And some things don't deserve to be considered art.

Zoii, are you trying to upset the Christians?

Judges 6:30-31
Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it. And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.

Wow.

Double wow.

Hey AvilaSurfer and Kenny, once we've firebombed the museums and made a decision about what is art, we can move on to the book burning!

I'm a Bad, bad Christian for not wanting my lord and savior made fun of.

You have GOT to be kidding, was that really supposed to make me feel guilty? Can you please burn Ronald and his cross first?

Art like this is just meant to troll.

Good. Some museums deserve to be fire bombed.

Zoii, are you trying to upset the Christians?

Then perhaps don't feed the trolls by drawing attention to it (especially the violent kind of attention)

I'm a Bad, bad Christian for not wanting my lord and savior made fun of.

I should have explained - The artist was depicting how our world worships commercialism. The intent, according to the artist, was not an attack on religion. Rather how commercial products take on an almost religious status.

However, as with art that may point at issues within the Islaamic world, Christians see the art as being blasphemy regardless of its intent.

This is not a troll thread and nor is the artist intending to troll. The thread raises the issue of how art challenges convention.

Good. Some museums deserve to be fire bombed.

Maybe you should find a country more to your liking, because America will not put up with that kind of nonsense.

I dont think the world is exactly crucifying commercialism these days.
Well no - You missed the point - The artist is indicating how corporations are lauded to massively influential status akin to a religion.

The thread though looks at the question: if we use a religious image to make a particular statement, is that off-limits - Does it warrant the action it received

Did I miss the point, or was the point poorly made?

What I see is this corporate symbol undergoing extreme persecution, almost as if to elicit deep sympathy the way the Christian crucifixion is meant to.

Maybe the artist made the point. But I dont think the art itself did.

Of course I believe in the right of museums to display cheap attention seeking art.

I hope you're not serious. if you are, I must say that you're supporting criminal conduct; and also supporting the actions of Moslems who killed those French Cartoonists.

Were you being serious?

Thats fair enough... but whats your view of using religious images to make such statements. Should such art be totally off-limits. Is it your view museums should have self imposed restrictions on such art.

Sorry, I posted this late:

I just wish the big "test case" involved art I could actually get behind.
