  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

On the theological side of things...he's catholic...I'm a witch... (yeah...I see irony all over the place there)...

We've agreed to leave that side of our lives outa things...
I won't do any Workings around him
He won't gather wood for a large pyre ^_^
(and yes, I realize we might be the only 2 people who find that funny!)

Not meaning to be snarky here, I'm just curious...what kind of witch are you? Do you consider yourself a "good" witch? Like a white witch? Would you consider yourself a pagen? I really am just curious. My son's gf's mom is a pagen and I'm not really sure what that means for her. So that's why the curiousity comes from. Hope you don't mind my inquiring.

I supposed if I get forced to put a larger label on myself I would be a Solitary Celtic Practioner of Witchcraft.
Broken down that means I'm not part of a coven and do most of my workings and rituals alone ;)
I follow a Celtic pantheon

The term "white witch" is rather amusing. Any true practioner will tell you there is no "white" or "black" magick...there is only magick and the heart of the Witch who raises, channels, and directs the energy, bending it to their will.

I can say that the majority of practioners do adhere to the 3-fold law and the "do what ye will an' harm none" found in the Wiccan Rede.

The main focus of the Craft for me is healing, herbalism, fertility (avid gardener ;)), hearth and home magicks. I'm excellent at tarot, fire divination, and mirror scrying.

But I should caution you...the label of "Pagan" is about as varied as the label "Christian"...there are so many different flavors of Pagan...just as there are so many different flavors of Christian ;) Where you have the various protestant, Catholic and Orthodox...we have Egyptian, Golden Dawn, Greek, Roman, Celtic, Native American, Pow Wow, Aboriginal etc...

If you're curious, just ask...most Pagans are of a mindset of "whatever path leads you to your God(dess) and gives you peace"...but there are a few that have really *HUGE* anti-christian boulders (not chips) on their shoulders ;)

Travel Lightly and Blessed Be :)

Thanks for the reply. I knew you were going to comment on the white witch lol, but it is a term someone told me that "they" were when I was a teenager. To them it meant using their craft for good, I guess. The woman who is my son's gf's mom that says she is a "pagen" comes out of mormonism and so yeah, she is very anti-christian. I know she does Tarot card readings and believes in the forces like moon, sun, nature etc. She has a Ouija board too. But I don't know how serious she is about her beliefs or how much she follows whatever.
Anyway, I do appreciate your comments to help me better understand you and people that believe as you do. I wasn't sure if pagen was even considered a "religion" to some or just a term for someone that didn't claim to believe in God. And I certainly didn't realize how general of a term it was. Thanks for helping me understand that as well.

Actually, the US Government recognizes Paganism as a legitmate religion and has awarded it the same 501(c)3 status as many other non-profit organizations.

The US Military allows the Pentacle to be placed on the tombs of fallen pagan soldiers.

I'm more than willing to answer any questions you may have...and to answer the quote below you'll see a bit more of my background and what led me back to paganism ;)

Hi, Gwenyfur :) If it's ok to ask, I'm wondering why a pagan would want to be part of a christian forum. You sound like a very interesting person.

Of course it's okay to ask :)

I joined CF in Dec '04. At the time I registered, I was a Messianic, married to a Baptist Seminary student, served as a church pianist, worked as a stage director with the youth's drama troupe, and in general spent all my time taking care of my family and serving in teh church...somewhere in there I still managed a full time job as well. So...that's what brought me to CF, a friend had told me it was a great place to hang out with other christian women...and I did hang out in WD when I first arrived...

Now I'm going to backtrack a bit...
When I was 10 I visited my paternal grandmother for the first time. She was a natural witch, my grandfather a keeper of the old ways, and my paternal great grandmother who was the daughter of her tribe's shaman. The things I learned that summer, the naturalness of herbalism, the stillness of listening to the wind, scrying in a stream, many of those types of activities spoke to my soul in a way I'd never been touched before...and it *fit* so naturally and completely that even after I returned home I continued to study...public libraries are wonderful things ... no matter the topic, the information can be had. I studied about earth magicks, herbalism, what herbs work with the body in what ways, and continued to meditate and learn to interpret the heartbeat of the earth.

During the intervening years I grew up, joined the Marine Corps, got married, had a daughter, got divorced, medically retired from teh Corps, and again...life goes on.

I met my 2nd husband just shortly after I learned to walk again...and he continued to witness, to entice...and being in the vulnerable, still reeling state of mind from losing everything I'd worked so hard for (career, health, rank, etc) I shrugged a bit and decided to give it a go...surely it couldn't hurt...

How wrong I was!

I got married, had another daughter, survived cancer, and we're back to the 1st paragraph of my answer... (you ask...you get thorough answer LOL)

a couple of years or so after joining CF I joined staff as a moderator, then as a supervisor, an admin...and until eventually I was made a Site Advisor by LeeD one of the previous owners.

I can say that life threw me a ton of curves in these last few years...witnessing the spiteful and hateful bigotry that happens behind the "closed doors" of staff areas, (yeah, that sentence there is my ban ticket from CF I'm sure), the hatred that's fostered and even encouraged in open forums, the spite of those who believe their interpretation of scripture, doctrine, dogma, traditon ... whatever is the only right one adn all others are going to hell...the infighting of all the different sects within christianity just...wore me down... add to that the escapades of my faithless, lying, adultering, worse than an infidel 2nd ex-husband...

What broke my faith forever and returned me to the path where I'm at peace, I feel at home, am comforted and secure?

in one word:

Hypocrisy

in all of its many forms, with its many faces, and varied actions. I reached a point where I could no longer look at an all knowing all loving god with any true faith...but I could see my Goddess as plain as day shaking her head at her former Priestess and saying "are you done wandering"... and I was :)

I resigned as an Advisor for CF, ironic considering I'd helped put that only christians can be staff rule in place (yeah...I know...) and actually left the site from nearly a year before I could come back.

But, I'd made friends here...people who made the effort to stay in touch even off of CF, to let me know they were thinking of me...

Eventually I came back...not to the same areas of course...with my belief set I'm not truly welcome in too many places heh...but as most in teh singles area can tell ya, I'm not pushy...I tend to make jokes about teh "witch finding the thread" or some other nonsense...and I don't take myself too seriously anywhere except the ritual or ceremonial circle ;)

Anyhow...I do hope that answered your question ...

Wow... I enjoyed reading this.. Gwenyfur.. religion is NOT the real thing.. either is our pathetic attempts to be holy.. our righteousness is as filthy rags.. the bible got it right there.. I can full understand and respect you in not wanting any part of that..

What a full life you have had you are amazing for coming through all this and remaining so open, honest and I will say trusting too.. You stayed here despite all that.. that amazes me but in another way I understand it too..

There is a more powerful force at work here then most will believe or realize.. that brings all walks of life together.. I love fellowshipping with you.. we all need each other more then we know.. we all brings something unique to the body..

Today wasn't bad here in Chicagoland. Cloudy with a bit of rain, but warm.

They're re-painting the hallways in the apartment complex I live in, and I must say whoever chose the color scheme needs to invest in a guide dog. Like, right now. It's terrible, with a brown lower section, an almost black stripe and-- so far-- light brown top section. The apartment doors and trim are painted dark brown-- almost black-- as well. It makes the place look like a slum building.

Maybe it'll be better once they lay the new carpeting, but I have my doubts. As it is, I wonder that they hope for new tenants. Try showing an apartment, and the prospective tenant sees that hallway and thinks "I've seen enough, I'm outa here!".

When I moved in, the color scheme was your standard apartment-issue eggshell white walls with grey doors and trim. Not the greatest, maybe, but a sight better than what they've got now.

Gwenyfur,
Thanks for telling your story. Very interesting that I'm sure. a trying life you have had. Sorry Christians have treated you so bad.
I remember quite a few years ago having God say to me, "Do you think I can't take care of myself?" I had been defending God like so many here beleive they have to do. And quite often not even realizing that God probably wasn't even offended at what they were using as a reason to stand up, argue about and put down the other Christan for.
Much of my life I couldn't understand your connection with nature. I've always enjoyed the outside. Have hiked thousands of miles thru God's landscape. But gradually I did start to see that God created this world and there was a connection to Him thru creation that wasn't adulterous. This often comes thru the in Psalms and the expression of worship there.
Anyways, I'm still trying to understand the fundamentalism/absolutism that you talk about but don't name. Its a big topic. But it does seem to me that there is something about peoples natures in the last 200 years that really draws out absolutism in human beings. Not just Christians. I was shocked in the last couple of years to see even liberals can have an absolutism that is what I traditionally say as fundamentalism that I'd only heard associated with conservatism.

We live is such a complex, interesting and perplexing world ...

Thank you also for answering the questions asked of you. I agree with you that some people that claim they are christians are truly the most judgemental group of people. And I agree with Dayhiker, it's not like God can't handle people that disagree with Him. The Bible says that one day every knee shall bow and know that He is God. Until that time we are all on our own journies to the desitinations that were created for us. I don't believe in coincidences, but that everything happens for a reason. I used to feel bad because I haven't led anyone to the Lord. But now that I've grown up a bit (hopefully ;)) I see that I can't lead anyone to God. It has to be the Holy Spirit leading them and drawing them, and then they have to make the ultimate choice. And since none of us have reached perfection yet (thankfully :D) none of us are worthy to judge anyone, yet we do it all the time. I personally try really had NOT to be judgemental. It really is a turn off. I can understand people being hurt and disillusioned etc especially in christianity because alot of christians are wrestling with accepting that Christ paid for all their sins, yet they still act like we have to earn our way to heaven. They preach that if you become a christian you will have a rosy life and if you don't it's because you have unconfessed sin, or some evil in your life and God is punishing or allowing it to happen until you change, which is just so ludicrous.
It is SO refreshing to see someone share here, that has a different opinion than alot of us, but yet, so far anyway, hasn't been bashed for what she's shared. How can we connect ever with people if we don't understand where they are coming from? So again....THANK YOU for sharing. I don't agree with some of your ways, but hey....it doesn't mean we can't be friends. I think Jesus would be your friend if He were still here on the earth. And instead of trying to change who you are or judging who you are, I want to be "Christ" like. So I appreciate your willingness to share. And I mean that sincerely. I think you bring valuable insight to our discussions and I like reading your posts.

If your excited Dory, I'll be excited as well ... kewl

Thanks dayhiker! Am very excited for many reasons, but the main one is she is the happiest I have ever seen her in her life, and after her ex treated her really badly for many years, and did a lot of damage to her emotionally and mentally, its just lovely that she has found someone who adores her, and treats her with such respect and love. :)
