I'm down for a bit this morning. The "Fickle Finger of Fate" reached out and got my truck good last night, broke the serpentine belt and probably took out an idler pulley as well. So, it's been towed to the shop now and I'm at home when I'm usually not, waiting to see if work makes renting a van worthwhile. Here lately, cheap freight and light loads make renting questionable at best so I have to see what "The Powers That Be" come up with.
For those who don't know: The serpentine belt powers everything that's engine driven. When it breaks the first sign you get is the battery light on your dashboard lighting up. You lose the alternator, power assist on the steering, water pump, air conditioning and in my case power assist on the brakes as well. When the belt breaks you're shut down like, right now because you won't go far without the water pump, if for no other reason. So, if your battery warning light comes on while driving it's a really good idea to stop, open the hood and look to see if the belt is OK. If it is, maybe you can drive to the service station. If not, call the tow truck.
