• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
 • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

οπως μη φανης τοις ανοις νηστευων αλλα τω πρι σου τω εν τω κρυφαιω και ο πηρ βλεπων ε τω κρυφεω αποδωσ σοι

that you appear not to fast to people, but to your Father in secret; and the Father perceiving in secret will give back to you.

Thanks for this post, I like your translation, "Appear not to fast" is good. I was unsure whether to put appear or reveal for phanes, and secret or hidden for krupto. I went with hidden and revealed for the contrast between them.

Matthew 6:19

μη θησαυριζετε υμιν θησαυρους επι της γης
οπου σης και βρωσις αφανιζει
και οπου κλεπται διορυσσουσιν και κλεπτουσιν

Don't store your treasures on the earth
where moths and food make-unseen
and where theives dig-through and they-steal

Don't store your treasures on the earth
where moths also are eating until it's gone
and where theives break in and steal,

βρῶσις
eating, food, meat.
From the base of bibrosko; (abstractly) eating (literally or figuratively); by extension (concretely) food (literally or figuratively) -- eating, food, meat.
(Strong's Greek Concordance)

Can you explain brosis translated as rust? I see that in every translation. Perhaps because metal is "eaten" by rust, but that seems tenuous to me. Do you know of other sources that use brosis like this?

Tim
You have well said Eaten because rust does slowly, like a thief, gradually eats away and corrodes the metal.
βρωσις noun: nominative singular feminine John 6:55; Romans 14:17
βρωσιν John 4:32 6:27; Joh 6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. 2Corinthians 9:10
βρωσει Colossians 2:16
βρωσεως 1Corinthians 8:4; Hebrews 12:16

As you can see βρωσις is close to βρωματα meat, so it means eating away like rotting meat.

You might say it is like a gangrene, to deaden by religious οr other discipline, as the carnal affections, bodily appetites, οr worldly desires.

Consider the way it is used in the Hebrew for the moth and the worm:

Isa 51:7 Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.

8 For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation from generation to generation.

Brosis is Strong's #1035
I see it as brosis in Matthew 6:19 and 20; and in John 6:55 (my flesh is real food) and in Romans 14:17 (the kingdom of God is not food and drink)

It is in the form Brosin in John 4:32 (I have food to eat that you know nothing about), Twice in John 6:27 (do not work for food that spoils, but food that endures) and 2 Cor 9:10 (supplies...bread for food)

Brosei in Colossians 2:16 (let therefore no one judge you in regard to food) (or in regard to eating)

Broseos in 1 Cor 8:4 about the meal sacrificed to idols)
and Hebrews 12:16 (Esau sold his birthright for one meal)

The endings of the word βρω σις, σιν, σει, are simply to determine how it is used in the Greek sentence, Noun, Verb, participle, present, Future, Mood, etc.; the various endings added to this stem are personal endings

I gave you this to show how the word is used in the context:

That's excellent, but how do the interpreters move from food, eating, meat, meal, etc to rust?
