• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

you but doing mercy-acts

But when you are being merciful,
don't let your better hand know
what your receiving hand does.

Explanation: I translated this differently from the usual "left hand right hand." It should be "don't let your left hand know what your right hand does." But I just like these translations of aristera and dexia, so I put them instead. Here are the Strong's definitions:

ἀριστερά (aristera), ἀριστερός:
left hand.
Apparently a comparative of the same as ariston; the left hand (as second-best) -- left (hand).

δεξιά (dexia), δεξιός:
right hand or side.

From dechomai; the right side or (feminine) hand (as that which usually takes) -- right (hand, side). see GREEK dechomai (accept)

ταμεῖον (tam-i'-on)
inner room, closet, storehouse.
Neuter contraction of a presumed derivative of tamias (a dispenser or distributor; akin to temno, to cut); a dispensary or magazine, i.e. A chamber on the ground-floor or interior of an Oriental house (generally used for storage or privacy, a spot for retirement) -- secret chamber, closet, storehouse.

βατταλογήσητε, βαττολογέω (bat-tol-og-eh'-o),
use vain repetitions.
From Battos (a proverbial stammerer) and logos; to stutter, i.e. (by implication) to prate tediously -- use vain repetitions.
Strong's Greek Dictionary

In Greek Mythology, Battos (Chatterbox) was the only witness when Hermes stole some cattle. Hermes went to Battos and offered one of the cows, if he would not say anything. Battos agreed saying, "Those stones over there will speak before I do!" Hermes didn't trust Battos, so he changed his form and came back to Battos, offering a bull and a cow if he will tell him what happened to the cattle. Battos tells him, so Hermes transforms Battos into a stone.

Matthew 6:11

τον αρτον ημων τον επιουσιον δος ημιν σημερον

The bread our the daily give us today

Give us today, our daily bread.

Original Word: ἐπιούσιος
Transliteration: epiousios
Phonetic Spelling: (ep-ee-oo'-see-os)
Short Definition: daily

This is an interesting word. Here's the Strong's Definition:
daily.

Perhaps from the same as epiousa; tomorrow's; but more probably from epi and a derivative of the present participle feminine of eimi; for subsistence, i.e. Needful -- daily.
see GREEK epiousa
Original Word: ἐπιοῦσα
Transliteration: epiousa
Phonetic Spelling: (ep-ee-oo'-sah)
Short Definition: following
following, next. Feminine singular participle of a comparative of epi and heimi (to go); supervening, i.e. (hemera or nux being expressed or implied) the ensuing day or night -- following, next.

see GREEK epi see GREEK eimi

So this translation is a possibility,
Give us today, our bread for the upcoming day.
