My suspicion is that this policy was implemented by Lerner.
My suspicion is that this policy was implemented by Lerner.
It also appears that Issa and the committee are not yet done with Lois Lerner. My suspicion is that the ex-Cincy employee is right, and that the checks and balances of the system wouldn't have allowed that.
She's innocent until proven guilty - or until she arrogantly takes the fifth so as not to undergo examination. What an attitude - they are so powerful they think they can do anything. Gowdy was right - they have no right to let her do that - she has the right to not testify, but they should have made her stay and ask each question for her to plead the 5th over. She really got off easy. I think most of the board was shocked that they did that.
It appears that Trey Gowdy was correct. Word on the street is that Issa, after consulting further with attorneys, is going to recall Lerner and proceed to cook her.It also appears that Issa and the committee are not yet done with Lois Lerner. My suspicion is that the ex-Cincy employee is right, and that the checks and balances of the system wouldn't have allowed that.
One of the committee members pointed out that she effectively waived her right to fifth amendment by giving testimony. Something about not being allowed to simply waltz into the hearings, give a self-serving statement, plead the fifth amendment and walk out.
Here's part of the exchange: Lois Lerner invokes Fifth Amendment in House hearing on IRS targeting - The Washington Post
At that point, Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) objected, saying Lerner waived her right to invoke the Fifth Amendment by making an opening statement. She ought to stay here and answer our questions, he declared.
Issa excused Lerner anyway subject to recall if the committee determines she did not properly invoke her right. He added that he might consult with the Justice Department about giving Lerner limited immunity to testify.
