Justice Sotomayor Falsely Claims 100,000 Children in ‘Serious Condition’ from Covid

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor falsely claimed that 100,000 children are in “serious condition” from Covid during oral arguments on the Biden administration’s employer vaccine mandate on Friday.

“We have hospitals that are almost at full capacity with people severely ill on ventilators. We have over 100,000 children, which we’ve never had before, in serious condition, and many on ventilators,” Sotomayor claimed.

The current number of confirmed pediatric hospitalizations with Covid in the U.S. is 3,342, according to data from the Department of Health and Human Services released on Friday. The average number of children admitted to the hospital per day with Covid was 776 as of Tuesday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
She needs to openly correct her fallacy or be removed. If we cannot trust a Supreme Court Justice to speak the truth, we are in trouble.

I think she could correct herself, but if a single wrong statement is enough to remove a supreme court justice, your supreme court would get empty real quick.

Incorrect statements, from Justices and from plumbers, can be the result of lying, misspeaking, misunderstanding, or being imprecise. It is always worth determining which is at work before taking action.

If 776 is average per day, that means some days were higher (and some lower). Perhaps she looked on a higher day or perhaps she was rounding up. Fact is that is a lot of sick kids. Can we extend her any grace?

Is it a lie, or was she just incorrect with her numbers?

True, but in both cases, Justices Sotomayor and Breyer chose to make claims -- dead wrong claims that almost anyone with even a passing knowledge of the Covid facts would know weren't true -- even though the lawyer who was there to testify about the matter and answer questions could simply have been asked about it. That may be why we call these things "hearings."

Youre lying. Even if wrong, it wasnt a fallacy. It was a falsehood.

You need to correct your falsehood or be removed.

I would refrain from calling false statements on christian forums lies. I have received multiple warnings for flaming because of that (though they were reversed after I explained that my statement was not intended as a flame).

Youre on notice, people: if you say a wrong thing, its a lie.

OP has, in the past, argued exactly that. As far as I could tell at the time, he was being sincere.

Yes she should correct it - but it is far from a single word. The actual numbers are as easy as going online with the CDC. If she had followed the science, she would see 3,000, not 100,000.

If she as a member of the Supreme Court does not have the staffing or ability to research information my 12 year old grandson can find in less than 2 min - she either needs new staffing or she is purposely trying to deceive.

Which do you think it is?

Considering that 20 percent of all those who are infected and symptomatic go on to have long-term sequalae from COVID-19, I don't find the 100,000 number to be unbelievable.

So quoting a number off of the top of your head, by memory, is a lie?

Indeed, if that were true - despite due care - I have told some massive lies in my life! Example, a simple misspeaking - "It is well established that the Vikings were the first Europeans to reach South America". Mea culpa.
At best the OP has a misguided understanding of what constitutes a lie; at worst they are manipulating reality to pursue an agenda.

You said she is the one who said it. So now you're saying someone else quoted the number off the top of their head and that Justice Sotomayor didn't actually say it?

In my estimation, sorting out those sorts of questions would be the responsible thing to do before calling people liars.

How do you know it was off the top of her head? Did the US Supreme Court Justice speak without educating herself on the subject first?
