• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My experience from Meds is that they take time to work and your body has to adjust to them. But I really recommand that instead of dealing with the symptoms of your illness(sounds like you have depression), deal with the root cause of your illness, and that can only be accomplished through Alternative treatments and medicine. Specially at this young age (Mine started about the same age) make sure to fix the problem, not the symptoms of the problem. But in the mean time, give time to you Meds, but maintain report with your doctor. God be with you. Pray about everyting.

I took Lexapro for about 6 months for chronic migraines—the first 2 weeks of taking it I was terribly depressed, but after that I did ok with it. Sometimes the side effects will go away—but you should definitely talk to your doctor again; there are other meds that may work with out the side effects.

yea, i got off the meds. later that day i felt like i was going crazy i was tempted to call 911 it was that bad. i called the dr and they got me prescription to kolonopins. they make me feel a lot better but last night at work i had to leave early because i felt drugged. when i came home i slept well but soon as i woke up i was so incredibly anxious again. i called the dr again and they told me to take a half of the kolonopin. i still feel a lil anxious especially since i have to go to work here soon. i just wish this would go away. i was completely normal last week and i just dont understand how i can be like this a week later.

Klonopin, Ativan and Xanax are Benzodiazepines (http://www.urban75.com/Drugs/benzos.html) and are the recommended drugs of choice in the treatment of social anxiety disorder.

With some, MAOI's (Monoamine oxidase inhibitors) are needed in conjunction with one of the above medications especially if one suffers from what is termed 'Avoidant Personality Disorder' and/or 'Performance Anxiety' The top two medications recommended are Parnate and Nardil.

All of the above drugs are controlled-substances in the U.S. and Canada but highly effective when combined with CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) in combating SAD.

As for the side-effects of using Lexapro, please google 'lexapro side-effects' - there is quite a few sites regarding.

My advise would be to ask your GP/Psychiatrist to change your meds to one of the ones listed above. I was on Ativan for approx. 6 weeks and did notice a change to the good with no real side-effects (slight fatigue at the beginning of treatment) You might have to try different meds AND dosages. If your GP is 'out of his league' when it comes to treating mental disorders, get a referral to a specialist. ;)

Hi. I've been on Lexapro since January and it's been working well for me.

Did they start you on a high dosage? I began on 10 milligrams and after a few months they decided I needed 20. When I first started taking it I experienced dry mouth and eyes, and occasional nausea. I still have the weird, vivid dreams and slight drowsiness, but both are tolerable (the dreams are almost never nightmares, which is a miracle for me).

If you are on a high dosage and still have side effects as severe as you are experiencing, I'd talk to your doctor about stepping it down for a while. However, it is worth it to stick with it if you can. It takes a month or two to work to its full potential, but you will feel much, much better if an SRI is indeed what your condition requires.

And, as Frank said, there can be other means of treating your condition. I have been through counseling in addition to the meds, and the combination has really worked for me.

Out of curiousity, how long are the periods in which he's on it? You really can't take it whenever you feel you need it and then stop. This is a drug that needs time to work up to its full effect and then it needs to stay in your system. My doctor doesn't like it if I miss even one dose.

I am currently on it and it has helped a little. I know that I have gotten bad headaches when I have just stopped taking it, but what your talking about sounds like you might be having an allergic reaction to it. I have had another drug (different type) give me similiar reactions. I would suggest you talk to your doctor about trying something else for you.

Lexapro is by far one of the safer drugs, used for depression and anxiety. I have taken it, and observed my patients on every drug you can think of for these conditions. Benzodiazepines are not my first choice at all. I have had to take xanax, and try missing a dose of this drug. I have to watch what I say since I am a mental health nurse. I am speaking of my exepeiences. May God bless you michael
