  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

So are you stopping from doing something that you know you shouldn't do?
Or are you just going to compromise on something you should be doing?

Morality: such a quagmire! It doesn't need to be! We need morality to be set by a higher authority and kick Euthyphro to the curb.

Neither.

I'm going to give you the "other side" of my beliefs.

The side you don't see, because I concentrate on just the one side.

The "dark side of the moon," so to speak.

Remember this post from many moons ago?
People think I'm so dead-set against scientists here, and I'll go overboard to make a point: I'll kiss the feet of a scientist before I kiss the feet of a theologian anyday.

And what is this, a Bible study thread?

I'm just curious.

Now, In Genesis 2, God makes Adam. After making Adam, God decides he needs companionship and makes the animals. But Adam doesn't find a suitable companion, so God takes one of his ribs and makes Eve.

Is that literally true?

The animals were already made.

God just paraded them past Adam, and when Adam saw Mr. & Mrs. Gorilla, Mr. & Mrs. Giraffe, Mr. & Mrs. Unicorn, he realized there was no Mr. & Mrs. Adam.

Mission accomplished.

It seems that you are implying that your version of "God" was not too bright. He made couples of all of the other animals but did not realize that he needed at least two of his supposed prized possession.

ETA: Though atheists are quite often accused of blasphemy it seems to be the theists here that denigrate their God the most.

Either that, or He saved the best for last.

Kind of like when you withhold the best present at Christmas and let the others open theirs first, then when Johnny is in sorrow that he didn't get a cool gift like the others, you say:

"Waitaminit! What's this!?"

And spring it on him.

You might have a point. According to the Genesis myth Adam was definitely not the brightest bulb in the box. He might have been fooled by such sleight of hand (and that is putting it too kindly).

Well, that attempt to get the thread back on topic didn't last long.
I usually interpret pleas to get a thread back on topic as saying, in essence, the new subject is uncomfortable to the one making the plea.

I've seen requests to have a thread put back on topic, and when it is, the posting stops.

This thread is supposed to be about Pluto, not about numerology, gematria, Galatians 3:26, or how God created the animals and Adam's wife. I should be quite comfortable with you creating separate threads on these topics if you wish to, but on this thread I would rather discuss the scientific implications of the re-classification of Pluto as a dwarf planet.

Fair enough.

I'll go to READ ONLY mode and we'll see how many more on-topic posts are made in this thread. ;)

And for the record, when I necro a thread, I usually do by getting it back on topic; but braniacs here like to scream & kick that a thread has been necroed, not realizing that the OP isn't around to whine & cry, should his thread go off-topic again.

I came across this fellow who claimed that if we went personally to Pluto we would be groping around in almost total darkness. In fact, he claimed that an approaching astronaut would not be able to detect Pluto with the naked eye because of the dimness of sunlight reaching it. That the only reason we see those bright landscapes is because they are artificially enhanced. Is this true?

Um, no they were not.

God made Adam in Genesis 2:7. God didn't make the animals until Genesis 2:19. The only way you can get around that is to claim that IN YOUR OPINION, the passages are not arranged chronologically in Genesis 2. And if you are basing it off your opinion rather than a literal reading of the Bible, then you aren't exactly a Biblical literalist, are you?

Actually, I am.

IN YOUR OPINION, how many times was Adam placed into the Garden in Genesis 2?

Genesis 2:8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

Genesis 2:15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
