They are chosen by the party and usually are elected parliamentarians. In all cases they need at all times to hold the confidence of the majority of the elected representatives of the house they sit in.

Yes sir We do have a problem...

And with Mexico, they'd be more than justified in getting it back on a myriad of fronts when considering the ways it was aquired as other states were. More discussed elsewhere on the issue:

Hawaii and Alaska both had their own language, culture, customs, etc, and they were much more different from "America" as today's Puerto Rico's culture, etc is. California was as Hispanic as Puerto Rico is, just happens to be "American" now because it became a state a long time ago.

The same would go for the Southwest U.S ...and from the perspective of others in those areas, from Texas to New Mexico and other places, it's truly another world at times..just as it'd be with Puerto Rico if added to statehood. Many have noted that the narratives of how those areas were aquired and their significance is different in the eyes of Hispanics than it is with other groups....

Then, there's all the federal money they receive for their levies, their roads, etc. No more Army Corps of Engineers for you. No free trade between us and you. Nothing but heavy tariffs for the traitors. Really, I think we should blow up the levies, rail lines, and roads on our way out, but there's no need to be petty. They'll lose all those things just by virtue of being unable to maintain them. Next big hurricane that wipes out New Orleans or Houston - sorry about your luck. When Mexico decides to invade - why would we defend you? You wanted to be free of us. How are you liking it?

So, let Louisiana secede. They nationalize their petroleum industry, throw out all the US Federal restrictions on petroleum production and refining, start pumping oil, and they sell it to the highest bidder.

My guess is they wouldn't be a welfare state for long. My guess is they'd probably be on a par with, say, Kuwait, or the United Arab Emirates.

We appear to be a nation of cities vs. suburbs/rural. It's a shame we don't see how we depend on each other.

Louisiana and Texas both receive more in federal subsidy than they pay in taxes. Louisiana gets almost a full $2 for every $1 they pay. So, it would actually save the US money to dump their butts.

To nationalize the oil fields currently in production, they would be breaking the contracts that the international corporations hold - in effect, Louisiana would have to steal the oil from its current owners. If they tried to sell this confiscated crude on the open international market, they would be sued.

Red states are generally more welfare states than blue states, which is particularly ironic given their penchant for complaining about socialism. So as someone living in a blue state, by all means, go away and stop mooching. More money/less taxes for the rest of us.

Actually, maybe that explains the US political system! Those living in the blue states rightfully feel like they don't get enough from the government, which is why they want more government spending (on them), whereas those living in red states actually see people getting way too much money from the government all around them, which is why they want to cut government spending (and we should, on those states)
