I have decided to give up pork today. I was going to continue eating bacon until I had decided that the SDA was right for me, but have found that God has been working on my conscience all week about my love of pork (it was my favourite meat), and today I knew that I had to give it up.

So, pork gone, and actually really pleased because it means that God is working with me. :)

You never ate gluten steaks?

My wife makes really good gluten steaks from gluten flour and whatever else she adds to that.

Gluten steaks :confused:

Oh, yeah. Seitan. I remember that. Don't like it but have given it an honest effort. Just tried some choplets where the ingredients say they have gluten. Breaded them in garlic/herb crumbs and fried them in olive oil and they're yummy. Can I have the recipe for your wife's gluten steaks and tips on where to get the ingredients?

Thanks!

First of all, congrats to you, Shrewsbury! May God, and God ONLY, continue to lead you in the path He has for you! I say that because very well meaning people in their zeal will unintentionally become the "voice of God" for you. Don't stray from the voice that is leading you now. Read an dstudy for yourself, as much as possible without prior editorials from others, or them giving you text,passages,and books to read, and also giving your how it should be interpreted. Keep your eyes on Jesus!

Secondly! Daryl, you did your wife undoubtedly delicious gluten steaks no justice in your post! I know what they are and wouldn't touch them so described. LOL!!!

Let's do better. Gluten steaks and all other such products, veggie/garden burgers, etc. are really meant to be kind of a bridge between eating pork and even meat to the desired and most often recommended vegetarian(and nowadays preferably) vegan diet. However, they kind of have become a "diet" fo their own. If do ne well, it can be very good. NO, it doesn't taste just like chicken, beef, seafood, or anything it is supposed to simulate. PLEASE don't let anyone tell you that and ruin the experience for you. However, they are good enough to substitute in meals. Take them as they are, and enjoy them. Done wrong and/or given unrealistic taste expectations, they can be
the nastiest thing you every tasted.

Being 4th generation SDA, of course, my family has many, many tasty veggie and vegan dishes.

Looks like we may need to start a vegetarian recipe thread here. :D

One thing for certain, the breaded gluten steaks my wife makes are a lot better than the real pork chops I used to love to eat prior to being enlightened when I came into contact with SDAs. They are also better than sirloin steak, etc.

Hi! Thanks for the post. I am really enjoying being here and learning about the SDA church.

So, Daryl, where's the recipe already? (your accolades for your wife's gluten steaks made me hungry).

Oh, if it's a secret I understand. It's just that we newbie Adventists can use any help we can get in the vegetarian cooking department so that we can eat more than peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and ramen noodles.

Gluten Steak Recipe
===============

2 cups cold Gluten Flour (keep gluten flour in fridge so it is cold)
1/4 cup Whole Wheat Flour (a little less than that is better)
1/4 cup Engivita Yeast Flakes
1/4 cup Oatmeal (be generous)
1 and 1/2 cup Real Cold Water
1/4 cup Soy Sauce
2 good Tablespoons of Onion Powder
1 Teaspoon of Garlic Powder
1 and 1/2 Teaspoon of Chicken Seasoning

Mix all dry ingredients together.
Mix water and together and then add to dry ingredients and work fast at mixing them together. It should feel spongy.
Make into two rolls and slice into 1/4" thick steaks.

Broth For Gluten Steaks
==================

6 cups Water
1/4 cup Soya Sauce
1 Pkg. Liptons Onion Soup Mix or, if not available, just plain Onion Soup
1 Bay Leaf
1 Tablespoon Engivita Yeast Flakes

Bring to a boil and add the Sliced Gluten Steaks.
Cook on Medium Heat or less for about an hour.

They will float to the top, which will be good.

Oh, thank you thank you thank you!! I'm going to visit my sister who lives Sonoma tomorrow and I'll make these for her. None of my family is Adventist and they think I'm kinda weird. My sister, in particular, (who is kinda anti-church anyway) got invited to an Adventist church near where she lives and confided that she'd never go back. Her reason wasn't religious. It was the disgusting potluck food, of all things.

I tried to assure her that not all vegetarian food was like that but since I don't even really cook non-vegetarian food (I keep the microwave companies and fast food industries alive) it's been hard to make a case. I mean, I'm so new to the church myself that I don't know much about some of the SDA doctrines let alone different food.

Even at my own church potlucks, I run by Panda Express and get a party tray of chow mein cause, like I said, I catch kitchen towels on fire - - and I'm not kidding, I did that last week :doh:.

So, thanks again. Of course, I'm going to have to figure out what some of the ingredients are (never heard of them) but I'll be OK. I'll let you know if my sister makes it out alive (not from your recipe but from my cooking) :)

:hug::hug::hug: (hugs for your wife)

I know that's right, RD. Try making putting them9just as you made them) in a sandwich! mmmm mmmm good! I did that two weeks ago.
The other week my Mom smothered them with some onions and gravy! Wow!!! There used to be a product called Dinner Cuts, also. Now, they were just too yummy! The trick to all of it is in the seasoning.

Oh, yeah. Seitan. I remember that. Don't like it but have given it an honest effort. Just tried some choplets where the ingredients say they have gluten. Yeah, you guys do have a point. Not because the recipe's bad but because I'll probably screw it up.

What makes me laugh is the quick replies and probably urgent intent of your posts.

I have this picture in my head of some screwball wanna-be chef wanting to grace the world with their chefdom (me) and the people around them (you guys) going, "NO,NO,NO!" (while frantically waving your hands in the air) because you fear for the safety of the guinea pig (my sisiter).

The more I think about that scenario the funnier it gets.:D
