  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's the difference between being high on pot and being high on alcohol?

Alcohol is allowed by God, and best I can tell, and I already explained why, any other drug is not...it's sorcery. If you don't agree with my reasoning, that of course is up to you, but there it is nonetheless. :)

So is it wrong for Christians to use marijuana if they live in a legal state or should they not be using it at all (recreational use wise)?
It all comes down to dosage and to why they want it. You could ask the same question about coffee (which I think is radically overused -- two small cups a day should be the absolute maximum).

Cannabis is a very powerful drug, so I think the verses against drunkenness certainly would apply.

Cannabis scrambles your brains so I can't imagine why anyone would think it is OK. Therefore, Christians (and anyone else) should avoid it. It has no good benefits whatsoever except to make you think you have gone schizophrenic.

Perhaps it is OK in microdoses (for those who have control over it) for help in getting to sleep or for restless leg syndrome.

Also need to consider the stigma. Many people will judge you for using it and that should be a consideration -- after all, we are social creatures and such things as reputation matter.

I will say I've personally seen more damage done with prescription pills, using according to directions, than I have with marijuana. The side effects are horrendous for pills. When you are in pain, I think it can be an excellent pain reliever. My only concern is abusing it but people abuse food, money, alcohol etc.

Im guessing noone here will sweat over the very very occasional use. But I know for a fact that if it becomes regular usage it messes with your ability to perform cognitively. For those with a predisposition towards mental health disorders, marijuana use is definitely a bad idea. Regular users in my country are called dope-heads or stoners.Their characteristics are that their day centres on being stoned. They are useless academically and become drop-outs. They get themselves in trouble at work and often dont have work. They become idle and take on even more negative habits.

Telling us you have a smoke at a party once in a while I dont think will raise too many concerns with people. Go beyond that and..... well look around at the people you know are stoners and then ask yourself if you want to aspire to that.

Yes, it is generally wrong.
LEVITICUS.10:9 = Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die.

But for Gentile Christians who are already addicted to marijuana or other intoxicating stuffs, they are exempt from the above burdensome law, as per ACTS.15:24-29, ie they can continue using marijuana.
....... Better to not be intoxicated from the beginning, especially for Jewish Christians or Messianic Jews.

Adultery, fornication, sodomy, idolatry, blasphemy and homosexuality are also legal in nearly all US states. Should US Christians also commit these sins.?

Most of the whole debate of weed is wrong came from the fact that it was illegal in most of this country for the longest, so when people in church would say they use it, they would get the trashing and hear they doing illegal activities and that is wrong.

Now that some states have it legal to use, is it wrong for a Christian to smoke weed. Ive come across youtube videos and see people on their social media pages that brag about doing it and brag about their faith too in other posts, but its technically legal in their state, so no different than smoking a cigarette in their eyes im guessing. I dont smoke anything or ever plan to, but im sure I will be accused of judging if I told another believer not to.

So is it wrong for Christians to use marijuana if they live in a legal state or should they not be using it at all (recreational use wise)?

The answer is in the affects cannabis has on the brain. Excluding medical uses of THC e.g for MS, why do people use cannabis? Similar reasons to why people use alcohol and other mind altering drugs. The affects of these aren’t conducive in the long term to righteous behaviour, godly wisdom, demonstrating fruits of the Spirit etc.

I wonder if Jesus walked around sucking on a weed. Seem rather unlikely wouldn't you say ?

I also don't think Jesus drank tea or coffee, or ever ate chocolate cake.

I wonder if or how many Christians on the forum would actually admit to smoking it :)

Once in a while, though I'd prefer an edible over smoking it. I also don't like getting high, it's not a pleasant experience for me, but enough to take the edge off now and then can be pleasant--especially since I have chronic back pain, and it's one of the few things that actually does seem to help with my pain.

I live in Washington so it's legal here. And it's pretty infrequent, maybe every few months.

Of course not. Jesus drank. Paul recommended that he drink some.

Hypocrites latch onto the "recreational use" and act like that is some kind of big sin. Not a sin at all. Alcohol can be drunk for recreational use.

This goes against the grain for those in a 'do this, don't do that' religion -- which is the default religion for those unsaved. Christians in name only. I find they often do not even know what Jesus taught.

Also alcohol of that time was seriously cut with water ( that was the culture, you don't read the bible to find that you study the time period). Added to that you were not to be under the influence of wine or strong drink according to the bible. Today's wine would be strong drink back then, they took something that was a very low % of alcohol to begin with and cut it. today a low % alcohol wine is maybe 8% ( crappy wine) and the good stuff more like 12-14%, many times more powerful than the wine back in biblical days.

Look, those who want alcohol or weed will dance all around the scripture or even ignore it to get it, so why even discuss it really. They will find a way to get what they want.

Well, alcohol can cause violence and aggression. Pot doesn't do that.
Alcohol causes terrible hangovers too. Pot doesn't.
And alcohol is a lot more addictive than pot.

It was both strong and diluted - depending on the use of it; as it was not only used to get drunk on -but it was often used in place of water in areas where there was no and very poor filtration methods .
It was made in strong form then diluted to whatever purpose they used it for -- Remember a certain man (Lot) where his daughters got their father drunk in order to have sex with him so they would get pregnant? Imagine them coaxing Lot into his 25th glass of wine :) ,- it was likely a lot(pun here:) ) less , like a couple wineskins shared among them all.
Really the big issue today with biblical wine is because of the problem with excessive alcoholic beverage abuse in modern times - there used to be people using the excuse that it was used in bible times to justify their abuse of it - then a culture shift started to say it was not real alcoholic wine in bible times and try to say it is just grape juice :)
abuse is abuse trying to say it was grape juice is not a valid replacement
Agree people will justify their usage , but it will be the Lord to decide if their usage is within the realm of acceptability by His standards

A little pot may not be sin but, we should remember the alcohol drinker here. The Bible says a little alcohol is good for the stomach yet, drunkards do not go to heaven.

So maybe smoking a little pot is okay? Yet too much may cause us to sin?

There are dangers involved with long term pot use though, or short term heavy use depending on age. There are a lot of studies linking even low levels of cannabis use to changes in brain chemistry that can lead to permanent changes in brain function in younger people. I smoked pot for a while as a student and just based on observation everyone I knew who smoked it developed habits of denial about how much it was affecting their behaviour. Overall I think there are enough reasons to consider it unwise.

Why? It's a drug, and a pretty potent one at that.

It is a herb, it always-was (?)
You don't see folks, 'tripping-out' on Hemlock, Belladonna & Mandrake ?
and yet, NONE OF THOSE, IS ILLEGAL

I give it to you that 'the fact' it has been made illegal
Is due ENTIRELY, to the motivations of PHARMA
and it's directing of Government
by both legitimate means 'lobbying'
and, as we know by 'Palm-greasing' aka: inflating of bank-accounts

Next, I will be reading;
that GOD created it, to tempt (USERS) us, into sin(?)
I genuinely doubt, He had any such intention

Why are so-many of you so-concerned, about what it is
that other-people might think, of what you do

I have had periods where I smoked it, did not have any issues. But, everyone is different.

I am mainly for legalization because it is far better then opiates for pain relief.

Recreational wise, I find it much safer then alcohol.

I don't know if legality is so much an issue as things can be legal and wrong. However, nothing in the Bible even mentions weed.

Marijuana is a plant. God created plant life. Many plants have purposes but the marijuana plant is so so so versatile.
It makes hemp.
Hemp can be used to make degradable paper, clothing, containers instead of plastic.
It makes cannabis oil.
Cannabis has been proven to cure diesease such as cancer, nervous system diseases ( shakes ). It’s also a natural relaxer. No doubt it’s also good for our skin.

The only way we can get high on cannabis is when it’s heated. The chemical THC that’s in cannabis is docile so to speak until it’s heated. When heated, it gives off the toxins that cause mind alternating. That’s why it’s smoked in joints.

The real reason why it’s banned is not because of its drug abuse because frankly, cannabis has never killed anybody, but alcohol and tobacco have been killing people in the millions each year,
It is banned because of its industrial properties. Hemp is very hard wearing which means clothes, plastic containers, paper etc out last anything else. It’s not good for buisness so to speak.

Check out this video and research your own government prohibition acts to see does it match.
Do I think Christians should avoid it? Not at all. As stated, it’s only when it’s smoked or heated in a hash pie is when it causes a high

What's the difference between being high on pot and being high on alcohol?
The differences from how it interacts in the body physiologically, and to how patients subjectively rate the effects are completely different. What evidence do you have to believe they're the same?
