Is following the 10 commandments required for salvation?

You're quoting the old covenant. The law was not written on peoples minds and placed on their hearts under that covenant

My friend, if you need to read the literal letter of the law in the OT to know stealing, murdering, bearing false witness, committing adultery is sin you are in a lot of trouble

Really , if the ten commands were required to be obeyed for our salvation then that work , being the ten commandments of God predated Jesus, would have made Jesus sacrifice unnecessary.
All we'd have to do to be saved is obey the ten commandments. Which wasn't even an issue in the OT times being animal sacrifices were necessary to cover the sins that occurred regardless of obedience.

Actually, I have found in life that those who most stress the ten commandments must be obeyed for salvation are the people who least reflect in their lives what Christ termed the higher points of the law.
They cannot obey the ten commandments themselves, but insists everyone else must to be saved( matt23:1-4)

You do know that Paul stated the Ten Commandments were the ministration of death 2Cor 3:7 For they were the only laws written on tablets of stone.
I hope you never have an impure thought, for if you do you break the tenth commandment and cannot be in a saved state according to your belief.

The Christian is not under a law of righteousness/justification before God. That includes the ten commandments as I can easily prove from scripture.

That is not a licence to sin, for the new covenant comes in TWO parts, not one. The first part cuts out a licence to sin as you are not under a law of righteousness

We are told in many places who will not enter the kingdom of God and it lists liars, adulterers, murderers, etc... everything the ten commandments says not to do.

This whole thing comes from a documentary I was watching on TV where an assassin for the mexican cartel pulls out a prayer and reads it nefore he goes off to murder someone because he believes he doesn't have to follow the ten commandments to be saved.

Why do you keep mentioning the ten commandments?
Why not the beatitudes instead?
Lets clarify.
If you look at a woman with lust in your eye you have already committed adultery with her in your heart.
Do not just say. I do not murder. If you get angry with your brother you are in danger of the fires of hell.
Why are you not saying
If you fail to follow the beatitudes you cannot be saved?
