  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

IMO (In My Opinion) GAME!

Martin Luther King Jr. was killed a month before our brother Lee was born. He won the Nobel Peace Prize (which originated where our family did, in Sweden) He's one of 3 people to have a national holiday named after them, the other two were presidents. (Lincoln and Washington) And Mom lives near Martin Luther King Blvd.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man. I'm just sorry that he died before I had a chance to actually be old enough to pay attention to what he had to say. (I was 6...a lot of great people were killed when I was little...but, man also took his first steps on the moon too. :) So, it wasn't all tragic.)

Okay, while we're on the subject of the decade I was born in...I'll pose the question...

The 60's. (and please be kind, some of us are who we are because of that defining era in U.S. history)

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair; we had everything before us, we had nothing before us..." (Charles Dickens,A Tale of Two Cities)
I've always found that passage evocative of the 60s,or at least how I remember it. I graduated high school in 1970,so I remember that time quite well. Assassinations, moon landing, cold war,Vietnam, civil rights..so much happening then,as now. It seemed there was a sense of hope in spite of everything, that things really could be changed for the better. For many Americans, the beginning of the decade meant riding in the back of the bus, segregated schools, separate restrooms and drinking fountains....at the end of the decade, that old system was in its death throes. It was a painful process, but one which was much needed and shamefully overdue.
On a lighter note, the music was awesome:)

What is your opinion of homeschooling?

Homeschooling is a good idea if you want to instill certain values in your kids that may not be in schools. One of the concerns I have with it though is how can the homeschooled develop social skills with kids who aren't as instilled as they are, if they're at home with their family most of the time?

No offense, but when you imply that children can only have certain values instilled in them if they're homeschooled, it's a little insulting. Christian parenting is a 24/7 x 18 to life responsibility for all Christian parents, not just homeshooling ones. ;)

As far as your concern about social skills being underdeveloped if a child is educated by their parent at home, I disagree. Most children have more avenues in which to develop socially than just school. I know I did. I had church, Girl Scouts, my family, my neighborhood. Many homeschool parents enlist other homeschool parents to do cooperative field trips like trips to the park, library, zoo, museums, etc. as well.

But, homeschooled children would be more likely to have a few years reprieve from learning about premarital sex, drugs, alcohol, racism, atheism (and other non-christian religions), not to mention violence, if not put into the public school system. And that is why many parents choose to do it.

I've had my children in both Christian private school and public school. I never seriously considered homeschooling despite many of my friends advocating it. Because I didn't feel that my education level was high enough to do right by them. But, I can tell you that having to teach your children about those worldly issues because they're exposed to them in public school, does take effort. But, because I have raised my children in a Christian home, with Christian values, it's not been a problem.

Sorry, to comment on your opinion. I don't usually do that. I hope you take it as an elder trying to help a young person with something that they didn't appear to know very much about. And not as my being mad at you. Because I'm not. ;)

Wikipedia?
( I was just looking up the history behind the Easter Bunny for my family this morning. I love Wikipedia personally. It's really helpful imo. But, what do you think about it? ±)

Exercise is how I live with Lupus Disease and Fibromyalgia. If it weren't for the endorphins, living would be a misery. Exercise imo is as necessary to a good quality of life as breathing.

Speaking of which, I need to go exercise. See ya!

The situation in the Congo?

Ok, so the only thing I found was that there is a menegitis outbreak along the DRC, Sudan, Burkina Faso, and Uganda. I don't know if this is what you are speaking of, or if you are just speaking of the general state of things.

I myself think the general state of Africa(the poverty stricken parts anyways) is absolutely terrible. When I was younger, I couldn't understand how their country and our country could be so different in our well being. All I PERSONALLY can do is pray for them, and donate to those that help the people over there. I applaud anyone who donates so much time and effort to the people who need help(assuming it is actually to help, and not really about the publicity...but that is an entirely different subject)

However, the bible says that the poor will ALWAYS be around you, and it is a condition I have seen all my life, so I imagine I am a little numbed to seeing it, and don't act outraged or traumatized by seeing the way they live. If they are believers, they will see their great life, full bellies, and mansions in Heaven. If they don't believe, then they need the WORD more than shoes on their feet. (I hope that doesn't sound too cold-hearted, I am not that way at all!)

Junk food is something that should be eaten rarely,if at all. Most of it's full of additives and chemicals and all sorts of garbage. There's nothing wrong with an occasional treat, but a homemade strawberry shortcake with fresh berries, for example,is so much better for you than something with partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, processed corn syrups, artificial flavourings and dyes...and it tastes much better, too!:)

IMO, I think there are are way too many pharmaceutical drugs. Not for the purpose of healing, but for the purpose of PROFIT. I think the medicinal industry is nearly as big as the weightloss biz. Most doctors get a kickback for every (prescribed) drug you get. If I can, I want to be able to take care of myself without too much medicine. No need to get pills and injections, if you don't have to :)

The reason most people need those pills anyways!

McDonalds is nothing but a heart attack waiting to happen, but I do have to give them a little bit of kudos for trying to healthy up their menu, but they aren't taking any of the garbage off! Of course, they only started on this health kick because of that movie "Supersize Me" and after they have had SOOOO many lawsuits over unhealthy people eating their food.

(Don Imus is a "shock jock" radio host, who just got fired for using a derogatory remark about the girls of the Rutgers basketball team. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have been doing the usual racism policing and stirring up trouble about it like they always do.)

World Hunger:
I would love to put an end to it (just call me Miss America!) but it is never going to happen in this world. Jesus said that the poverty stricken will always be around. So, it is never going to end, and I think it is mainly because the better half of the population of the world is pretty uncaring and greedy. Maybe uncaring isn't the right word, more like 'out of sight, out of mind'. Since the poverty isn't in their back yard, they don't think too much of it.

It seems to me that if everybody could pull $5 out of there paycheck to put towards feeding the hungry, we could make a HUGE dent in it! Just a thought.
