Did you see the special on 60 minutes about this topic? Personally, I know a lot of people who have used it illegally. And I know that they'll continue to do so, regardless of if they get caught or not. So it's legalization will make little difference to them, and I'm sure, to a lot of people. I wasn't opposed to it being legalized for cancer and glaucoma patients before. But, according to the 60 minutes story, there are some factions that are trying to make it legal for everything from fatal illness' to a hang-nail.
I wish that people would obey the laws that be, or go through the proper channels to get those laws changed instead of break them. And that seems to be what people are trying to do. I've never been a law breaker. Although, I come from a family who is not so morally bound. So... I don't know enough about it to offer a good opinion about whether legalizing it, will make any real difference in it's usage.
But, my opinion of smoking pot is that it makes people who are normally intelligent become idiots who say and do stupid things. Their reaction time is severely hampered ( driving)...and they eat anything they can get their hands on. (obesity) Would it be good to unloose such a demon on the populous? And trust that they'll have the strength of character to know thier limits? Probably not. Not because I am not strong enough to handle the choice. I made it a long time ago. But, some people are looking for reason to not feel guilty about a new vice that will hamper their ability to rise above the baser side of humanity. And I can't really be for that.
