A little competition in the market would be nice, though...

I sure hope AMD doesn't flounder.
There's been competition and it's been grand. But if they don't come out with a killer chip for socket AM2, their days are numbered.

That's my point. Not that there hasn't been competition, but that competition has been declining significantly. Apple's switch to Intel, was an immediate transition of some 7%(?) of the whole PC market. With all this Core Duo stuff, AMD is having a hard time keeping up. Their chips run slower and hotter. They're cheaper, to be sure, but can they keep up like this?

Well, their chips run faster and cooler than Intel's P4s which are still their flagship processor until the Core 2 Duo is released. But yeah, they're going to do to AMD what AMD did to them 2 years ago.

Wow, the worst of both worlds. I took a look at some other Object Desktop programs and made a note not to download this one.

Heh, yeah. Actually, I do like ObjectDock though. It's the only eye candy utility that I've found to be really useful. The rest of their stuff just makes things run weird.

Have you seen the performance previews of a Core 2 Duo (Conroe) vs. an overclocked Athlon 64 FX 60?

Ah, that good 'ol test. Thanks, but I'll wait until they're testing the product that's on the shelf.

As I've said all along AM2 is just a stepping stone for AMD to jump to DDR3 and make more major revisions to the architecture. You'd have to be foolish anyway to expect a simple memory change to give some magical performance boost, especially when K8 isn't starved for bandwidth.

You should hope so, since it certainly can't run away ;)

And I'm going to get a peecee just because it's a tad bit faster than my Mac? I think not. Benchmarks are benchmarks, just like in cars. If I'm reading a car magazine and during a road test and one car get from 0 to 60 mph in a few seconds less than the other, will that persuade me to buy it solely for that reason? I think not.

Would the sequel be "Revenge of the Commodore 64"?

It's not the Neptunians you have to be worried about, though. They're all chumps and our stinking diseases will do them in. It's the Planet-X'ers you have to watch out for. Why, if we didn't have Godzilla, I just don't know what we'd do.

Hehe, does "The Mac" refer to a computer made by Apple, or to Macrina? Or is it a clever pun that means both?

Right, but they'll have to switch to a new socket for that AGAIN.

The real issue is the software. Who wants to run an admittedly decent computer without cool games. Either will do the simple office tasks I do, but without the same game selection MACs would not be much of an option. If I were going to go without games as much I would run linux again.

I never thought of that... :D

Macs (not MACS, thank you) have most of the same games as are available for the PC. The odd thing is that most major ones may come out six months or more for the Mac after the PC. But patience pays out in the end. I'd rather wait for the games to come out while using a superior computer than have the games immediately while realizing I'm using a inferior one.

The important thing is to have a highly portable computer. In this day and age, it needs to go everywhere with you:
