Hello HannahBanana!

Funny, that's my nickname around here! We must be the coolest, right? :D And, I did think that I was thanking cantata for her thoughts...ooops! But, I am and hope she sees this.

And, seeker you are right! What can I say...but for me..I just am going to trust my God and know that no matter what this world "looks like" it isn't really as it should be, and trust that HE knows what to do with us all, amen! Thanks again "everyone"! hannah d'banana :D

Have nice weekends and I'm hoping no one will dwell on this..as we really have no control over what China is up to..so no worries..I was, I guess just thinking out loud..which "does" get me into all kinds of trouble!
Yeah, Hannahs are the coolest. :D By the way, I really like your username. My grandfather's Russian name is "Fievel" (his American name is Phillip), and I love anything that reminds me of him.

I hope you have a good weekend, too!

China and the USA are practically the same country just on opposite sides of the globe; both of our economies are dependent upon one another; if they boycotted our stuff/tourism, theyd lose money, and if we boycott their stuff, we'd lose money.

Its all about dat cash flooooooo! money makes the world go 'round. Money cant buy happiness, but it sure as heck can buy stuff to distract one form their own depression and empty voids called lives.

That is in a nutshell why we do not boycott China; its all economic, really.

Also, its a sporting event; if you cant beat their economy, you can at least beat them symbollicy in basketball.

The U.S.A.'s largest trading partner is Canada.

Most Americans don't know that.

China and the USA are not even remotely close to being the same country.

China would survive without the U.S., just as they have survived for the lat 5500 years. The U.S.A.'s consumerist society would not survive without China, in that, there is no doubt.

I'd mention this to the ethnically Chineese programmer from Tiawan that works here except she is on vacation and I value my life.

thats why I said practically; =P

anyway, someone is gonna miss my point completely bc they dont recognize sarcasm.

anyway; its an economic issue, really.

This is why we don't bomb Saudi Arabia; theyre a big trader with us, even though they harvest the most terrorists. We don't impose sanctions on China for their cruelty and crimes against humanity bc of money and economic reasons.

Yet, we bomb Iraq bc they have nothing to offer us! long live freedom!

lol =P

I couldn't agree with you more.

It frightens me the number of average Americans who can't see through the charade.

Well, because the Olympics bring tourism and hence a boost to the economy. More cash in the pockets of street vendors, shop owners, &c.

No, not necessarily.
Everybody expected that this would happen - foreign tourists galore, money flying around, and everyone prospering.
That's before the gov. decided to deport thousands of foreign residents, and close down numerous bars, shops and restaurants. Some areas of Beijing have lost up to 50% of their clients due to the mass deportations and new visa restrictions. Tourism is down 20% since last summer, many English language schools have had to close down for the summer due to lack of teachers, anyone making a fuss of any kind is in custody. The message I and many other expats there received was, "you are not welcome here." China has really disappointed a lot of people regarding their policies surrounding the Olympics.

Okay, I guess I am telling everyone the depth of my cynanism. I awoke to see the games to be started this morning...and the Anchorman said...there had been a tradegy. :(

Well, I don't believe for a second that our volleyball coach was victim to a Chinese person that lived 700 miles from Bejing looking to rob someone, and he happened to get picked??? And, then the guy "jumped to his death after killing our coach and wounding a woman".

I think this..our volleyball coach said "whatever wrong" and the Chinese Government got mad, someone was "sent" to take him out, and then they threw someone annonomously off the tower next to where the stabbing took place. And, that is all we will probably ever get to know. :(

Now..of course...that is just my lowly humble opinion. I just thought the whole thing bizzare. If someone who lived 700 miles from DC and came to kill someone as a robbery, it would take almost forever for them to be caught...like mr. rockerfeller, or whatever his real name is, ya' know? So, there is the saga for today, and :prayer: not too many things like this will continue, amen! Sincerely, hannah :(

Very savvy, savvy! ;) And, yes..I have been reading news articles and online articles saying the same things you have said here. I so wish more people would keep up with the world around them. Afterall, no man, woman, or country is an island! Thanks, hannah

It wasn't the coach who died. It was his father-in-law.

In fairness, you haven't even got the facts straight. So, please, temper your outrage at China and get the facts.

The Olympics are supposed to surpass all the differences between the countries. I'm sick & tired of hearing people saying we should boycott it. A sporting event uniting everyone is NOT the place for politics.
It is when thousands of people have been forcibly evicted without compensation to make way for the Olympic Stadium.

That can never be justifiable

Okay, I was wrong it was the coach's fil, sorry! But, it still makes me wonder the "why" it happened..and I still don't believe what we are being told. End of story, and it is "my opinion" okay?

So, we don't have to argue...remember "to each his own" and I have my thoughts and you are totally allowed to have and keep yours. So, we be good, right? hannah

Kinda like what America did to the Natives. Except in China, when the Olympics are over, the guests leave and everyone gets to go back home.

America never left.

How will boycotting the games now make any difference to the plight of the people who were evicted?

It sends the message that it is not acceptable.

I have to agree - a boycott is very little use in the long term - personally I think China should never have been awarded the Olympics - it makes a mockery of all Olympic ideals.

However

I have no wish to watch them and so passively condone such injustice, which is why I will not be viewing any of the Olympics.

To be honest, I doubt the Chinese will notice.

The fact is that doing something like boycotting the games is pretty much just an exercise in making oneself feel better, and while that's fine, one shouldn't pretend that it makes one especially noble.
