"Communism is a failed system, universally failed system," Biden admitted. "I don't see socialism as a very useful substitute, but that's another story," he continued without elaborating.

100% in agreement on both items.

Communism is a failed system and Socialism is not a very useful substitute.

Your poll is flawed because you are presenting it to two groups of people with completely different definitions of what "socialism" is.

At one extreme there are people who would like to end Social Security, Medicare, and every program passed under FDR, LBJ, and Obama.

The other group would like to extend those programs so that there would be Medicare for All (as there is in every other industrialized nation in the world), better family leave policies, living wages, etc. Dozens of countries from Canada to western Europe have enacted those progressive policies without becoming socialist.

The most dangerous part of socialism, as I see it, is when democracy is pushed out of the picture. Troubled socialist nations (Venezuela, for example) are led by corrupt dictators. Voting rights are suppressed, and elections are manipulated and corrupted. Funny, that's exactly what it seems like the previous president and his supporters have been working on doing the past five years---while falsely spouting scare tactics about "Democrats and socialism." Hmm...

How is "socialism" being defined?

Dozens of ways depending on whom you speak with. IMHO it all boils down to three -
1. The strong capitalist type - as in Europe
2. The failed states - too many to mention
3. The pipe dream that the left promotes, but in reality has never existed.

I agree with "if only the blind could see". It's time to look on President Biden as the reformer that he is, especially concerning erasing the disastrous policies of his predecessor. His moves are toward participatory democracy, not socialism.

Censorship to control what is truth does away with democracy.

I agree with half of it, but I find your first definition a useful substitute.

Dozens of countries from Canada to western Europe have enacted those progressive policies without becoming Socialist.

This isn't really accurate. A number of western European countries consider themselves to be socialist and most have had openly socialist governments on multiple occasions including the present.

Socialist isn't a bad word in most of Europe like it is in America. Its certainly not something people would feel the need to try and deny or feel they had to defend themselves over.

This could turn into a real bash time but I hope not. Trump was a lot of things including doing some very good things. I truly believe anyone would have gotten the job over Trump. Biden was not a dinamic win. Just the only viable option. I hope for the countries sake he fights socialism as he contends.

The issue for me is that many on the left support the ideas of the strong capitalist type of welfare state in Europe.

I think that #1 is better labeled "the strong capitalist type of welfare state" as it exists in Europe.

I suspect that there are many on the left who would be very happy with an American system that resembled some of the welfare states of Europe.

On the other hand some seem to favor the welfare state elements and also the hate for capitalism.

Biden and Obama are not leftists. They never have been. The left celebrates what they pass of their agenda. This is similar to the far right Republicans who have celebrated Bush and Trump, and what they could do to support their extreme agendas.

Really? I haven't gotten that impression, and I would see that as a good thing if it were true.
