After partying and dropping out of college, I was working planting tree farms with loblolly pine seedlings when I was 23. I felt as if I might not be able to stay in the job until the end of the tree planting season. I promised God if I made it to the end of the season, I would give my discretionary bonus for staying the season to charity. God helped me through. I was poor not even owning a car, but gave the bonus to the specified charity as I promised. Later in life I bought a new car with cash. When I say actually help, I mean materially improve the situation. I don’t mean ANY form of making me feel better about it. His grace, love, presence, patience, etc.=not actually helping. How do I get him to act rather than give me completely empty words?
Sometimes I pray to God about what I should do next. I might get an answer like, “Read the Gospel of Mark.” It gets me through my life.
