  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey guys,

I know I've been away for quite a while. Anyway I just wanted to share something fascinating:

Did you guys know about Mel Gibson directing a movie titled, "The Passion"? It's about Jesus =)

http://www.cathnews.com/news/209/53.php

(I had no idea he was a Catholic!)

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=30497

(Check out what Mel Gibson says at the bottom of that link)

http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet...1221/RVPASS/Arts/thearts/thearts_temp/5/5/41/

(Jim Caviezel, also a Catholic, plays the role of Jesus!!!)

God bless!

However, there is talk of him not being in full communion with the Church ie: that he doesn't think the present Pope is valid, etc., etc.

His daughter has either become a nun or is in the process.

I'm glad, though, that he shows his Catholosism and I look forward to his new movie. The main character playing Jesus (I forget his name, from Frequency) is a devout, daily-mass, type of Roman Catholic.

DH's great Aunt Jane just loves Mel, because not only is he handsome, he's Catholic and faithful to his wife! :D She's 78, BTW...

Mel's wife is 78? :D

But if he is not in full communion with Rome, then can he be called Catholic?

Mel is a traditionalist - IE - a reactionary. He's of the old school opinion that protestants are ****** outright and that there is no mass except the latin mass.

He does however have a strong faith. :) He will do no movie without first approaching his confessor about it first.

He was interviewed last night on the O'reilly factor. For some reason some one is out to get him over this movie. :sigh:

I don't know that I'd call someone who believed that Protestants are all ****** a Christian, at least not a very godly one.  If that's what he thinks it shows his lack of conviction to so readily prostitute himself out by receiving the money of so many people he thinks are ******.

Doesn't that view bother any of you?

I believe that Mel Gibson is a sedevacantist (this rumor has a wide circulation though I have not confirmed it), which means that he holds that the Chair of Peter is currently vacant. If this is true, he is not a Catholic.

Personally, I won't be going to see this movie. It's supposedly going to be entirely in latin and aramaic (as someone else has mentioned) and though I have a passing familiarity with latin (from my days as an altar boy) I'm NOT going to sit through a movie where I cannot understand a blooming thing.

Maybe I'll wait for the DVD and hope they put in captions then.

No.  Why do you ask?

Because LaHaye and Jenkins, two popular non-Catholic writers, in their series Left Behind, write that all Catholics will be left behind unless they drop their Catholic beliefs. In the story line, the Pope is the handpuppet of the Anti-Christ and helps bring about the one world religion. Yet both of those two have no problem proclaiming their Christianity either and making millions off of this long, drawn out, boring, brain-washing series.

Ergo, if you were a fan of them and their tactics, it would be hypocritical to lamblast those of us who supported Mel Gibson.

But since you're not, forget about it.

I believe LaHaye and Jenkins to be competent writers but as far as their theological views, they leave much to be desired and do a poor job of representing Christianity.

Just for the record, Mel Gibson is one of my favorite actors.  And, if God has given him a desire to serve the Lord then praise God.  I just think that a view that claims that other Christians are going to hell because they're not Catholic does very little to show a person's obedience to God.

God bless

Keep in mind, I said talk. How do we know for sure unless he says for sure. I just don't want anybody to think badly of him for something that is unconfirmed. I apologize for perhaps gossiping?

It hasn't been all that long since Protestant were considered heretics but are now called "seperated bretheren." A really good definition of "heretic" would be good right now but I won't be back 'till tomorrow,so if someone else would do the honours?

Thanx,Luv

Mel is a sedevacantist; he believes Vatican II to be invalid, and Popes John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I, and John Paul II to be invalid as well.

I don't believe he's a member of SSPX, but he'd fit right in. :)
